Irwindale, Calif. - - Last week's Jani-King Super Late Model race got a little too exciting (even for Irwindale!) with top-rated driver Brandon Loverock's number 99 car ending up a torn-up lump and Brandon exiting the destroyed machine straight up through the roof of his virtually bodyless race car. A bruised ankle was the only physical damage for Brandon even though his car was totaled in the spectacular crash which occurred on lap 20 of the scheduled 75-lapper for the big cars. Everyone in the crowd that night was very quiet until Brandon popped up OK, and then they cheered loudly for both Loverock and the track safety crew. This week the racing will be every bit as competitive, but, we hope, somewhat easier on the equipment and everyone's blood pressure --
This week's racing is brought to the fans by our very good friends at Foothill Independent Bank (do stop by one of their many offices and ask for a free sample -- But don't tell them that WE sent you). In addition to the Super Late Models going for the Miller MONEY, we'll have two divisions of pickup trucks, the Ultra Wheels Super Trucks and the West Coast Pro Trucks, neither of which will haul anything bulky from the home store, but both of which put on VERY entertaining shows on the Irwindale half-mile oval.
We've heard that the Discovery Channel is planning to shoot both divisions for an upcoming program featuring everyone's favorite "Cowboy Cadillacs", the ubiquitous pick'em'up truck in all its variations.
The Vista Paint Super Stocks will also be on hand with their unique brand of competition in what are really actual Camaros and other "pony cars". This low-cost (relatively -- ask one of the drivers at the on-track autograph session) division is always up for the race and anything can happen when these steel-bodied beasts turn "magnetic".
"By the way -- When's the next Pick Your Part Figure 8 Race? That last one on July 5th was something else!"
Hey -- Glad you asked! It's this Saturday night and it'll be jam-packed with those hold-your-breath near misses that everyone craves. These drivers are either brave or crazy and, truth be known, they're a wild combination of both. Picture this Marvin: 18 to 20 really hot racing cars whipping around Irwindale's infamous off-set Figure 8 course at full ramming speed with sweet nobody willing to back off at the crossroads. The operative words and phrases here are "Watch Out!", "OH SHOOT!", and the ever-popular "Ouch!" (And that's just what the fans say -- You should hear the drivers!)
Anyhow, all of the above plus the really cool King Taco On-Track Autograph Session when the show starts at 6PM makes Irwindale the ideal place to cool off after a warm July day. Kids under 5 are FREE, Adults are $15, and the 6 to 12 set are only $5.
Hey, bring a new unwrapped toy for the LA Firefighters' "Spark Of Love / Christmas in July" toy drive and get a $5.00 discount off of those already low, low prices!
Remember Racer Rick (always) says: "Show your card and SAVE!" since Auto Club members always get a 10% discount on up to six ticks at every race.
