On October 28th, Greg Edwards was awarded the 2006 Langley Speedway NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series Track Champion in the Late Model Division.
Greg Edwards, a native of Poquoson, VA, returned to Langley Speedway in 2006 with his sights set on winning the Track Championship but he knew it wouldn't be easy. After touring with the ASA Series, Edwards returned to his home track at Langley Speedway mid-season of 2004 after the ASA demised. Finishing the 2005 season in third place, Edwards was determined to win the Championship in 2006. It took a dedicated and hard working crew, endless nights working in the shop and a lot of motivation. With many challenges throughout the season the crew pulled it together, overcame the challenges and made their way to the top.
The Top-three drivers (Greg Edwards, Mark Wertz and Danny Edwards) all went back-and-forth during the season to lead in track points. After battling the season with the other Dodges, and a lot of trial and error, Greg and his crew found just the right car set-up to win.
During the season opener, Greg broke his own track record which he had set in 2005 but then his car blew a radiator hose during the first race putting him in tenth for the finish. It wasn't long before he made his way to lead in the track points and he held on for the lead for five races until he dropped to second after the rear-end plug came out during the ninth race of the season. Six races later and Greg was back in the lead which he held on to until the very end.
It was certainly a season filled with excitement! Overall, Greg finished the season with 20 Starts, 20 top-ten finishes, 18 top-fives, 8 qualifying poles, and 5 wins. Consistency, a hard working crew, dedicated sponsors, motivating fans, and loving family and friends all helped Greg to claim his victory as the 2006 Langley Speedway Track Champion.
In addition to his Track Championship, Greg finished eighth in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series National Championship based on his best 16 finishes of the season. Greg will receive his award at the annual banquet in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 11, 2006.
Along with many other career achievements, this is Greg's second Langley Speedway Track Championship Title. Before leaving Langley Speedway to tour in the ASA Series, Greg won the Track Championship in 1998. Greg was also the very first to win the National Championship title in Arena Racing USA in 2003.
