Hurricane Hannah forces reschedule of Shrine race at Greenville Pickens Speedway.
GREENVILLE, SC (September 14, 2002)- Soaking rains due to the onset of Hurricane Hannah in the Southeast has forced the cancellation of tonight's annual Shrine race at Greenville Pickens Speedway. The traditional season finale will now be moved up two weeks to Saturday, September 28.
NASCAR's calculation for points in the Atlantic region of the Weekly Racing Series will conclude this weekend, however, the run for track championships in each GPS division will continue and be decided at the Shrine Race on September 28. Marty Ward and Shane Gentry have a mathematical lock on the Late Model and Charger divisions respectively, however, the race for the track title in the Super Stock and Street Stock divisions is a tight one, within single digits, and will be decided at the rescheduled Shrine Race event.
Advance ticket sales for the 2002 Shrine Race have been extended through Friday, September 27, with discounted tickets available at usual Shrine Race outlets. Advance tickets are $12.00 if purchased before the race, and $15.00 the day of the race. Gates for will open on Saturday, September 28 at 4pm with the first race set to roll at 8pm.
The running of the NASCAR All Pro "Cintas 200" is not effected by this change. Along with the All Pro race, the Charger 'Grand Challenge' will feature all Charger competitors in one race for 25 laps, with the winner taking home a $1,000 prize. A 20 lap Super Stock 'Grand Challenge' will also be run, with the winner taking home $1,000. Only eligible drivers who have competed throughout the season can vie for the added purse in these 'Grand Challenge' events on September 2l, and these races will not count in the final calculations for track championship points. Gates will open at 4pm on Saturday, September 21. Adult general admission will be $20, with children under 12 admitted free with a paying adult.
