BECHTELSVILLE, PA AUGUST 13, 2000 . . . Veteran racer Sam Schoenly wheeled his Hardee's Restaurant/Hydromotion Co. sponsored entry to victory in the 30-lap NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified feature race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. It was Schoenly's first victory since 1998. And in the 20-lap Exide ShorTrack Late Model feature race 17- year-old Sam Schlosberg drove his Green Lane Wm. Penn #70 to victory for the third time this season. Schoenly grabbed the top spot from Ron Haring, who started on the pole, on the first lap and lead every lap of the 30-lap feature to pick up the win and the $2,200 first place money. However, even though he lead all the laps, the win may have been the toughest of Schoenly's long career. Ray Swinehart put pressure on Schoenly in the early laps and actually nosed in front a couple of times. However on the 18th lap, after a restart, Swinehart went to the pits with a tire problem. Donny Erb replaced Swinehart as Schoenly's nemesis. And a couple laps later Tom Mayberry moved to second. With three laps to go in the feature Doug Manmiller came up to give the leader a run for the money and at the finish Manmiller, without a win this season, was just a few feet behind the winner. Schoenly (Boyertown) said in victory lane that he felt he still had something left for Manmiller......if it was needed. However the veteran was able to hold him off and take his first win of the season....his first since 1998. The second place finish for Manmiller (Sinking Spring, PA) was his most impressive effort of the season. Third spot went to Terry Meitzler (Kutztown) coming from 27th starting spot. The third place finish gave Meitzler a 38 point edge over challenger Jeff Strunk in the chase for the track title. Fourth place went to Tom Mayberry (Sellersville) with Jeff Strunk (Bethel) coming from 23rd to grab fifth. In the 20-lap feature for Exide ShorTrack Late Models 17-year-old Sam Schlosberg (Green Lane) started eighth and grabbed the top spot from Mike Erb (who went to the pits with a flat tire) on the 5th lap. Bill Henning, with his Dodge powered entry lead briefly but not enough for an official lap before turning the lead over to Schlosberg. The youngster showed that he has been paying attention to how the veterans do it and was able to hold off challenges from Kyle Pensinger and former champion Dean Stoudt. However, with just four laps to go, Kyle Pensinger was able to get the top spot. Schlosberg gave the leader plenty of pressure with the nose of his car at the rear bumper right up to the final turn of the final lap. Schlosberg "pushed" his way past the leader in the fourth turn, with the checkered flag in sight, to win his third of the season. Kyle Pensinger (Lyons), the current late model point leader, finished second followed by Dean Stoudt (East Greenville), Doug Walton (Phoenixville) and Terry Snyder (Green Lane). Unofficially Terry Meitzler earned the $200 Timber Wolf Smokeless Tobacco Hard Charger Award for gaining 24 positions in the feature, from 27th to 3rd. Qualifying heats were earned by Doug Manmiller, Sam Schoenly, Jack Hartnett, Mike Bailey and Doug Pannepacker. The consolation events were won by Kenny Gilmore, Chip Slocum and Jeff Strunk. And it was Doug Pannepacker, in a Mopar powered entry, winning the Cash Dash and $390. Kevin Hartnett will receive $25.00 from Kochel Equipment of Elverson, PA as First Alternate. The Late Model qualifying events went to Bill Henning, Casey Ebright and John Durling while John Giesler, a former champion, grabbed the consolation victory. On Thursday, August 17, 7:30 p.m. the DIRT Super Series Modifieds will be in action at Grandview Speedway in the CARQUEST Traffic Jam 100. And on Saturday, August 19, 7:30 p.m. the NASCAR Modifieds and Exide ShorTrack Late Models return to Grandview Speedway for a doubleheader show sponsored by Exide Batteries. There is a Sunday raindate, 7 p.m. for the Saturday show. Grandview Speedway is located on Passmore Road, just off Route 100 in Bechtelsville, PA, 10 miles north of Pottstown.
