BECHTELSVILLE, PA MAY 28, 2000.....With just two laps remaining in the 30-lap Arnold's Karting Center NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified stock car feature at Grandview Speedway Terry Meitzler was able to grab the lead and the victory on Saturday night. Chuck Sennott won the 20 lap feature for NASCAR Exide ShorTrack Late Model racers. Sophomore racing talent Todd Heydt grabbed the early lead with Jack Hartnett moving in front of the pack on the second lap. After two multi car accidents, one in which Dennis Bailey barrel rolled down the front straightaway (not injured), Chip Slocum was able to gain the top spot on the sixth lap. Once in front Slocum seemed to have the race in control. Even as a couple of cautions closed the field behind him Slocum was able to keep the Giels Automotive entry in front of the 34 car starting field. Donny Erb put pressure on the leader but was also kept busy trying to hold off point leader Terry Meitzler who had come from 17th starting spot to challenge the leaders. At 20 laps Slocum was in front followed by Erb, Meitzler, Jon Kellner and Doug Manmiller. Five laps later Slocum was still comfortable in front of the pack but it was Meitzler replacing Donny Erb in second. And with just two laps to go defending modified champion Meitzler, in the Meitzler Excavating sponsored entry, was able to get by Slocum and ride to his first victory of the season. When track announcer Ernie Saxton asked Meitzler, in victory lane, how he was able to make a run for the win in the closing laps, Meitzler responded, "When he (Slocum) was leading (so easily) we were not in second yet. Once we got to second I knew we could catch him. I knew the low part of the track dried out in the late part of the race. I don't know if he wanted the low part of the track or he just took the bait when I stuck my nose under him turn three. I wanted to buzz him around the top and that is what happened." With the win the Kutztown, PA racer as able to hold on to the point lead in the NASCAR Modified standings at Grandview Speedway and also pick up $2,200 for his efforts. Chip Slocum (Ewing Township, NJ) finished second followed by Donny Erb (Douglassville), Jon Kellner (Lansdale) and Jeff Strunk (Bethel). Strunk came from 25th starting spot. Ninth place finisher Kerry Kratz (Bechtelsville) came from 34th, having taken a provisional starting spot, to grab ninth and earn $200 as the Timber Wolf Hard Charger. In the 20-lap main event for the NASCAR Exide ShorTrack Late Model racers it was Dave Conover in front for the first three laps with Casey Ebright getting the top spot on the fourth circuit of the one-third-mile, clay banked oval. Chuck Sennott, a transplanted upstate New Yorker now living in Gilbertsville, PA, put the Kochel Equipment sponsored machine in front of the pack on the 8th lap and was able to keep command to the checkered flag. Defending champion Jeff Teets (Coplay) challenged Sennott a number of times but just was not able to take the top spot. Teets settled for second while former champion and current point leader Dean Stoudt (East Greenville) earned third from an 11th place starting spot. Mike Bedell (Pottstown) was fourth and Kyle Pensinger (Lyons) finished fifth coming from 18th starting position. With 66 NASCAR Modifieds in the pits six qualifying heat races were run with wins going to Chip Slocum, Todd Heydt, Terry Meitzler, Kenny Gilmore, Todd Marburger and Shawn Reimert. The consolation races were won by Jeff Strunk, Doug Pannepacker and Ray Swinehart. Todd Heydt won the Automotive Machining Services Cash Dash worth $325. Mike Giannini earned the Kochel Equipment First Alternate Award worth $25.00. Late model qualifying event wins went to Chuck Sennott, Dean Stoudt and Dave Conover while the consolation victory was earned by John Giesler. PIT NOTES: With rain forcing cancellation of many outdoor events throughout the area much credit must go to the track crew and officials for their efforts. "Having lost seven of ten scheduled events (including the Thunder on the Hill sprint series opener and raindate) we wanted to make every effort to get this one in. The late afternoon rain had us talking about cancelling but we just kept at it. We had a great field of cars, 66 modifieds, and we wanted to give the fans a show. We really appreciate the support of the fans that did come out in damp and cool weather. I think they got to see a good night of racing," said event organizer Bruce Rogers. In a qualifying heat Ed Aikin flipped his Lynch Electric sponsored entry but was not injured. However he was unable to continue. Chuck Sennott uses the #61 on his late model in memory of the late NASCAR Modified champion and racing legend Richie Evans.
