BECHTELSVILLE, PA APRIL 21, 2001 . . . Tom Mayberry is celebrating his 25th season of driving race cars and nothing would make him happier than to win the NASCAR Modified championship at Grandview Speedway. Mayberry, who calls Sellersville, PA home, took a big step in that direction on Saturday night as he won the 30-lap modified feature race on the one-third-mile, clay banked oval picking up the $2200 first place money.
In the 20-lap feature for NASCAR Late Models Doug Walton was able to earn a win and the 15-lap feature for PA Sportsman went to Dave Dissinger.
The 30-lap feature for NASCAR Modifieds saw Mayberry start on the pole and lead all the laps to claim the victory. However Craig VonDohren made every effort to take the win. The two played a "chess match" on several restarts with each trying to out think the other. In the end Mayberry, in the Mike Kelly owned A&T Chevy sponsored entry, was able to lead VonDohren and his Mrs. T's Pierogies entry to the finish line by a narrow margin.
In victory lane Mayberry said, "There wasn't too much on the outside. The inside wasn't real good either. Coming out of the bottom on the fourth turn was the best. He (VonDohren) kept trying to leave (on restarts) a little earlier and a little earlier. He was trying to get a wheel down on me and one time he succeeded. Fortunately the yellow came out."
Point leader Jeff Strunk finished third followed by Kevin Hartnett and Doug Manmiller.
In the 20-lap feature for NASCAR Late Models Doug Walton, Phoenixville, was the winner leading all 20 laps. The previous Saturday Walton finished a strong second but was moved to the rear after it was found he was running a carburetor that did not meet track specs. There were no problems with the carburetor this Saturday. Second spot, challenging for the victory at the finish, was Kyle Pensinger followed by Sam Schlossberg, Lou Egrie and Ed Trimbur.
Dave Dissinger, Mohrsville, grabbed the win in the 15-lap featue for the PA Sportsman. Last week's winner Ed Scott and Dissinger battled for much of the race with Dissinger able to hold on for the victory. Second spot went to Kenny Gilmore who came on strong in the final laps. Scott grabbed third followed by Shawn Fitzpatrick and Joe Biasi.
Qualifying heats for the more than 60 NASCAR modifieds went to Kenny Gilmore, Doug Manmiller, Terry Meitzler, Craig VonDohren and Tom Mayberry. The consolation races went to Smokey Warren, Jack Hartnett and Ed Aikin while the Automotive Machining Services Cash Dash, worth $330, went to Doug Manmiller.
Qualifying heats for the NASCAR Late Models were won by Doug Walton, Chuck Sennott and Sam Schlossberg. And the qualifying heat for PA Sportsman went to Dave Dissinger.
