JEFF STRUNK CONTINUES TO LEAD $40,000 MODIFIED POINT CHASE

BECHTELSVILLE, PA AUGUST 1, 1999 . . . Challenger Kevin Hartnett had a great opportunity to gain some ground on points leader Jeff Strunk this past weekend in the chase for the lucrative Motor Truck Equipment Co. Kenworth Cummins PA NASCAR Modified Championship Series title. With $40,000 in point fund money up for grabs and $15,000 waiting for the champion, the competition is heating up. On Saturday night (July 31) Jeff Strunk was out of the NASCAR Winston Racing Series feature at Grandview Speedway on the first lap. That opened the door for second place point chaser Kevin Hartnett to close up on Strunk in the point battle. It did not happen. Hartnett had some "front end" problems early and was in the pits, a spectator, along with Jeff Strunk. With just about one month to go in the point chase, about eight races, each event becomes more important to the series point chasers. Jeff Strunk (Bethel, PA) has 9230 counters and 5 wins on the circuit that includes events at Big Diamond Raceway (Minersville, PA) on Friday nights and Grandview Speedway (Bechtelsville, PA) on Saturday nights. Surprising is the fact that Kevin Hartnett (Perkasie) is holding down second spot in the chase for the $15,000 first place point money without benefit of a feature win this season. Hartnett has 8825 points. One bad night for Strunk and one good night for Hartnett could change things around considerably. In third is Jon Kellner (Lansdale) with 8465 points. Kellner also has no wins. In fact John Willman, sixth in the standings, is the only other driver in the top ten to have a feature win. Willman has two. Consistent performance, not wins, seem to be the answer to being in the thick of the battle for the point fund title. Fourth spot is held by Dennis Bailey (Kutztown) 8315, followed by Shawn Reimert (Oley) 7880, John Willman (Zionsville) 7700, Smokey Warren (Jonestown) 7595, Jack Hartnett (Telford) 6970, Mike Bailey (Kutztown) 6875, and Glenn Strunk (Bechtelsville) 6610. Keith Hoffman, not in the top ten in the point chase, leads the feature winners on the Motor Truck Equipment Co. Kenworth Cummins PA NASCAR Modified Championship Series circuit with 7. Tom Mayberry has six wins while Jeff Strunk has five wins. John Willman and Rick Schaffer each have two wins. And there are a number of drivers with one win including Donny Erb, Jim Hauer, Kenny Gilmore, Chip Slocum, Todd Heydt, Ray Swinehart, Terry Meitzler, and Ron Haring. The chase for the lucrative title continues with the NASCAR Modifieds performing at Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville, PA on Friday, August 6, starting at 8 p.m. Included in that show will be the roadrunners and sportsman. And on Saturday, August 7, the NASCAR Modifieds will run for $10,000 to win in the Motor Truck Equipment Co. Kenworth Cummins PA NASCAR Modified Championship Series Forrest Rogers Memorial 50-lapper. Also included in the show will be the NASCAR Late Models.
