BECHTELSVILLE, PA MAY 17, 2003 . . . Defending NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified champion Jeff Strunk drove the Chad Sinon owned BPG Racing entry to his first victory of the season at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. The win, the first for the new team of Sinon and Strunk, came in the 30-lap Auto Locator Magazine NASCAR Modified feature race. In the 20-lap feature for the Late Model stock cars Chris Shuey drove the Kistler Buildings/Miller's Used Cars & Trucks entry to his second win of the season.
Tom Pompei put his Pompei Construction #100 in front of the 29-car starting field at the drop of the green with young Ryan Watt in hot pursuit. At the eight lap marker Craig VonDohren got shuffled from a top five spot back several spots in an altercation in the second turn. After a tenth lap accident Ryan Watt was able to take the lead away from Pompei on the restart. Two laps later it was Randy Bailey getting the lead on a caution restart. Watt, who had performed so well all evening, went to the infield while running second.
At the midway point it was Randy Bailey and Jeff Strunk, who came from 18th starting spot, battling for the victory. And with the record books showing 18 laps completed Jeff Strunk was in control with Randy Bailey working to hold off Terry Meitzler in second. Craig VonDohren had come back through the pack to run fourth.
With just five laps to run a multi car accident put VonDohren, Donny Erb, Tracy Readinger and others to the back of the pack with Jeff Strunk still holding on to the lead.
For the final five laps Strunk, who calls Bethel, PA home, was able to keep command while Randy Bailey (Kutztown) held off Terry Meitzler (Kutztown) for second. In fourth was Jon Kellner (Lansdale) followed by Meme DeSantis (Temple) who had been forced to go to the rear of the field with a tire problem early in the race and came back to gain a strong fifth place finish.
The victory put Jeff Strunk in the point lead as he tries for this third track title at Grandview Speedway.
In the Late Model feature it was Harry Neiman Jr. setting the pace at the start and holding off some strong challenges from veteran Chris Shuey for the first half of the race. In fact it was not until the 12th circuit of the one-third-mile clay oval that Shuey was able to put his mount in front of the field. And Randy Stoudt came up to challenge.
The final five laps of the feature saw a three car battle for the victory between Shuey, Stoudt and Neiman with Shuey getting his second win of the season. The Orefield, PA racer was less than one-half-second in front of Randy Stoudt (Pottstown) at the finish. Harry Neiman (Pottstown) got his best career finish with a third. Fourth place was earned by Jason Miller (New Tripoli) followed by Rick Todorow (Quakertown).
In the late model qualifying events wins went to Shuey, Ron Chrisman and Neiman while the consolation was won by Ray Swinehart.
The qualifying events for the Modified stock cars were won by Shawn Reimert, Kyle Weiss, Kenny Gilmore, Tom Pompei and Craig VonDohren. Consolation races went to Ryan Beltz, Doug Manmiller, and Steve Bottcher with Craig VonDohren getting $480 for his win the Automotive Machining Cash Dash.
