Solomon and Snyder win at Grandview Speedway

BECHTELSVILLE, PA MAY 10, 2003 . . . Veteran modified stock car racer Larry Solomon of Reading, PA drove his Eagle Arms Gun Club/Emmaus Beverages sponsored #517 Modified stock car to victory Saturday night in the 30-lap Harry's U-Pull-It Auto Parts NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified feature at Grandview Speedway. It was the first win for Solomon at the Berks County oval since July, 1991. And in the companion 20-lapper for Late Model stock cars Terry Snyder of Green Lane, PA drove his own #4s Scott Communications/Cheers Tavern entry to victory, his first since 2001.

Both Solomon and Snyder were the fourth different drivers to win this season in their respective divisions of racing.

The modified feature race with 29 cars starting saw an 8 car accident on the first lap bring out the red flag. With no one injured the race had a complete restart with those involved in the accident, those able to continue, starting at the back of the pack. Todd Marburger came from second spot to take the lead with Larry Solomon running second and that is the way the top two ran for 19 laps while Shawn Reimert, Terry Meitzler and Greg Sarangoulis chased them.

With 19 laps in the record book Marburger and Solomon caught up to slower traffic with the leader choosing the low groove and Solomon going to the outside. The move by the slower traffic put Solomon in front and pulling away from the field.

With five laps to go Solomon was still the man to beat with Marburger chasing but with just two more laps left to reach 30 circuits Marburger had a tire going flat that slowed his pace. Meme DeSantis (Temple) became a factor on the final lap but Solomon was able to hold him off while Terry Meitzler (Kutztown) was able to grab a strong third place finish. Jeff Strunk (Bethel), the defending track champion, came on strong in the final laps to gather in a fourth place finish and it was point leader Jon Kellner (Lansdale) coming across in fifth spot.

Solomon picked up $2200 for his winning effort. This is the first season that the veteran racer has returned to Grandview Speedway as a regular competitor in the modified competition in a number of years.

In the 20-lap feature for the late models, with 26 cars taking the green, a multi car tangle brought out the red on the first lap with several of the top competitors suffering damage. No one was injured in the accident. On the restart Terry Snyder put his mount in front of the pack and with one lap completed a red was brought out as Buddy Wharton's WHAR-LOCK late model caught fire as it came off turn four. Again no injuries as Terry Snyder was back in front on the restart.

Snyder, a long time campaigner at Grandview Speedway, was able to hold on to the top spot for the entire 20 laps and pick up his first victory of the season. For the second week in a row Junior Grebe (Boyertown) was able to come home in second spot. Sam Schlosberg (East Greenville) was third followed by Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) and Randy Stoudt (Pottstown). More than 50 modifieds were on hand with five qualifying events being run and wins going to Rick Schaffer (a huge puff of smoke coming out the rear of the car at the finish putting him out of action), Shawn Reimert, Greg Sarangoulis, Keith Brightbill and Randy Bailey. Consolation events went to Jon Kellner Jr., John Willman and Ron Seltman while the Cash Dash worth $320 went to Shawn Reimert.

Qualifying heat races for the Late Models were won by Junior Grebe, Ron Chrisman and Ray Swinehart. There was no consolation race for the Late Models.
