Kellner and Shuey win features at Grandview Speedway

BECHTELSVILLE, PA APRIL 19, 2003 . . . Jon Kellner made his first trip to victory lane in quite sometime on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway.

The veteran Lansdale, PA racer wheeled the Hutt's Glass/Pit Stop Restaurant #85AM NASCAR Modified to victory in the 30-lap NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified feature race. It was his first trip to victory lane in two seasons at the Berks County oval.

In the companion 20-lapper for NASCAR Late Models, Chris Shuey, a former standout performer at Port Royal and Selinsgrove Speedways, led all the laps to take his first career victory at Grandview Speedway. The Orefield, PA driver was driving the Miller Used Car and Trucks/Kistler Buildings #56. Shuey is racing as a teammate to Jason Miller who won the opening night late model feature.

The 30-lap main event for Modifieds had Todd Marburger in front of the pack at the drop of the green and leading for 13 laps. In the 14th circuit Jeff Strunk, coming from 9th starting spot, put the BPG Racing #88 in front of the 29 car starting field. One lap later Keith Brightbill and Ryan Watt tangled in turn three causing a 10 car accident. Glenn Strunk suffered a cut on his arm and had some pain in his knee and was getting first aid attention at the track when the race resumed.

On the restart again Jeff Strunk , using a ten year old racing engine, was in front with Jon Kellner, coming from eighth starting spot, right on his rear bumper. At 21 laps Rick Schaffer brought out the caution with a spin in turn four and on that restart Jon Kellener got the jump to take the lead. Once in front Kellner was able to hold off some strong challenges from Strunk throughout the final laps. Kellner's margin of victory over Strunk (Bethel) was just about one-half second. In third spot was Craig VonDohren (Oley) followed by Meme DeSantis (Temple) and Terry Meitzler (Kutztown).

The 20-lap feature for Late Models had Chris Shuey starting on the pole and setting the pace for all the laps to win his first feature on the one-third-mile, clay banked oval. However the win did not come as easy as it sounds. Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) who had to settle for second pulled alongside of the leader several times but just could not get the edge to take the lead and the win. Third spot was taken by defending champion Lou Egrie (Willow Grove) followed by Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville) and John Gielser (Aston).

Qualifying heat races for the Modifieds were won by Craig VonDohren, Jon Kellner, Ryan Watt, Ray Swinehart and Meme DeSantis. The consolation race victories were earned by Mike Gular, Jon Kellner Jr. and Danny Erb. And the $300 Cash Dash went to Meme DeSantis.

In the Late Model qualifiers wins went to Chris Shuey, Chuck Schutz and Dean Stoudt. The consolation was was a win for John Giesler.

Both feature race winners received sportswear courtesy of the Checkered Flag Fan Club.
