BECHTELSVILLE, PA FEBRUARY 26, 2000 . . . Tom Mayberry is not your typical professional race driver. He is easy going. He lets very little bother him. He spends his free time doing furniture restoration and even fits in a paint job for a friends quarter midget. However when he gets on the race track, Tom Mayberry becomes a different person. His primary goal is to win races. And he is pretty good at doing that. Last season he won 7 features but a couple of events in which he did not qualify for the feature and a couple "did not finishes" kept them from giving Terry Meitzler, the 1999 NASCAR Modified Champion, a serious chase for the title. "We have a new Bicknell race car ready for the season. We will be using that car in the opener. And if it works we will keep it as the primary car. If not we will go back to the old 1998 Bicknell. It is ready to go," said the veteran racer who works as the body shop manager at A&T Chevrolet in Sellersville, PA. "We are going to go after the Grandview title and we think we have a very good chance at the NASCAR Regional title. That is some big money. And we will make some selected appearances at Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville including their season opener on April 9." Mayberry would like nothing better than to be able to win the season opener on Saturday, April 1. That tripleheader show, starting at 5 p.m., will feature the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modifieds, the Exide Shortrack Late Models and PA Sportsman. The Mike Kelly owned cars, with Tom Mayberry at the wheel, will participate in the March 25th free to the public practice session. The five hour practice session, starting at noon, is open to modifieds, late models, sportsman and any other racers planning to run at Grandview Speedway during the season. "I think the DNQ's and the DNF's really cost us the title last year. Some of that was my fault, my mistakes. We are going to approach things differently this year. We will take a little more conservative approach but still go for the win. We will use a little more discretion at times." said Mayberry. Racing for the Mayberry's is a family deal with wife, Corinna, at each race along with daughter, Morgan, and son T.J. They are the Tom Mayberry Fan Club. Corinna kicks in a little sponsorship support for the team from her Corinna's County Store in Hereford, PA. This is an old country store offering old and new gourmet food, antiques, anything you could want as a country gift. Additional sponsorship comes from A&T Chevrolet of Sellersville, PA, as primary sponsor. Tim Long Insurance, King Industries, Bicknell Racing and J&L Speed Supplies all offer support for the Mike Kelly team. Mayberry will have plenty of competition in his battle for the championship. Returning to defend his title is Terry Meitzler. And Ray Swinehart will be back to try for another title. Other top competitors expected to see action at Grandview Speedway include Dennis Bailey, Smokey Warren, Ed Aikin, Jon Kellner, Kevin Hartnett, John Willman and a host of others. Grandview Speedway will offer NASCAR sanctioned stock car racing throughout the 2000 season with racing continuing into late September.
