Stefanik wins third straight in Featherlite Mods

STAFFORD SPRINGS, Conn. (May 22, 1998) Mike Stefanik of Coventry, R.I., won his third consecutive race of the season in the Featherlite Modified Series, a NASCAR Touring Division, in the eighth annual $49,886 Connecticut Classic at the Stafford Motor Speedway Friday night.

Stefanik started from the outside of the front row and led all 150 laps. He gambled by not stopping for fresh tires as most of the other drivers did. It was the 49th series win for Stefanik, the Featherlite Modified Series' all-time leader in victories.

"I was little concerned toward the end of the race," Stefanik said. "I was happy with the way the car was so we decided to stay out and not pit. Tonight it worked out okay."

Even though Stefanik led all 150 laps he was pressured by Tim Connolly of Endicott, N.Y., from lap 65 to lap 100. During a caution period on lap 101 Connolly headed to pit road for a fresh set of tires.

Connolly quickly worked his way back to the front, eventually reaching third on lap 137. One lap later Connolly went high on the race track in turn two losing several positions and eventually finished seventh.

Chris Kopec of Ware, Mass., recorded a series career best second place finish. Kopec spun off the track on lap 17 while running third. He was almost lapped by Stefanik but a caution period occurred on lap 32, which allowed him to catch up to the field.

After pitting for fresh tires he worked his way back to the front.

John Blewett III of Lakewood, N.J., also recorded a career best series finish by placing third. Carl Pasteryak of Lisbon, Conn., finished fourth. Ed Kennedy of Coppell, Texas, finished fifth after starting 28th.

Rounding out the top-10 were Eddie Flemke, Connolly, Peter Madden, Jamie Tomaino and Tony Hirschman.
