"Magic Shoes" returns to Modified racing
Nazareth, PA (May 13, 2003) - "Magic Shoes" Mike McLaughlin will make his return to NASCAR Featherlite Modified racing this weekend at Nazareth Speedway, running the No. 21 Lombardi Inside Out/Rebuilders Automotive Chevrolet Monte Carlo for champion car owner Art Barry in Sunday's Service Electric 100. The car's usual driver, Mike Stefanik, will be competing in the NASCAR Grand Nationaal Division, Busch North Series event at Lake Erie Speedway on Sunday.
While it's been ten years since McLaughlin has strapped in behind the wheel of a Modified, McLaughlin is no stranger to this type of racing. He won the series' championship in 1988 and the Waterloo, NY native has posted 16 Featherlite Modified Tour victories, tying him for seventh all-time with fellow New Yorker Steve Park. McLaughlin's last victory came in 1993 at Thompson Speedway.
Having driven in the NASCAR Busch Series since leaving the Modified ranks, comparing and contrasting the two cars can prove a bit difficult.
"I've been trying to think of (the main differences between the two series) myself," McLaughlin joked. "It's been so long since I've been in a modified and it's going to be a lot of fun. That's why I'm doing it - to have fun because I used to have a lot of fun with those cars."
Modified racing isn't the only thing on McLaughlin's list of things to do this weekend. He'll also be practicing Todd Bodine's No. 92 ESGR Herzog Jackson Motorsports Chevrolet.
"You can be a lot more aggressive with a Modified car than a Busch car," McLaughlin said. "That's the biggest difference (between the two cars). I'm really anticipating (racing this weekend) because it has been so long since I've been in a Modified."
The race season begins at Nazareth Speedway on May 17-18 with the return of the NASCAR Busch Series to the Lehigh Valley for the Goulds Pumps ITT Industries 200. Jason Keller will return to defend his title against some of the most talented drivers on the circuit, including Randy LaJoie, Scott Riggs, Scott Wimmer, Bobby Hamilton, Jr. and Kerry Earnhardt. And don't miss all the action of the Service Electric 100, as Nevin George, Tony Hirschman and Ted Christopher renew their battle for NASCAR Featherlite Modified title.
