Jan Leaty runner-up at Spencer
Williamson, NY - Jan Leaty and the Branich Motorsports team made the short tow to Spencer Speedway for the NASCAR Modified Weekly Racing Series season opener at the ½ mile oval on May 9th. Leaty left with a runner-up finish in the 30-lap feature event, chasing pole sitter Bill Hebing to the checkered flag.
The team rebounded from disappointment in the Spring Sizzler at Stafford (CT) Speedway two weeks ago, when an early race accident brought an end to the team's effort in the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series event.
In the second of three 10-lap qualifiers, Leaty started his Pace Electronics/Heluva Good Foods Pontiac outside the third row. He just missed the pass for the win at the flag stand at the finish. His second place finish put him inside the third row to start the feature.
Two attempts to start the race were marred by accidents before the 22-car field could even complete a lap. The third attempt to start the race was successful, but over the first third of the race, several more cautions slowed the race. After the green flew, Leaty patiently worked up to the second spot with 10 laps to go, and he chased Hebing to the checkered as the pair pulled away from the rest of the field.
"Our goal was to have a strong run, be competitive, and finish the race," said Leaty. "We had a nice run, but the car was just a little too loose at the end."
The team will next travel to Nazareth (PA) Speedway for the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series "Service Electric 100" on May 17th. For more information about Leaty, Branich Motorsports, and their sponsors, visit www.speedwayad.com/BranichMod.
