NASCAR Touring doubleheader on at NHIS
LOUDON, N.H. (Aug. 27, 1998) While there are four races remaining on each of the NASCAR Touring Division's Busch North Series and Featherlite Modified Series, championships will be on the line during the Farm Aid On CMT Doubleheader on Saturday.
It is expected that the series' championships will go to the last race of the year, but the unique Lincoln Welders/ARCO track championships will be decided in Saturday's final race of four scheduled at NHIS in 1998.
While track championships are commonplace at NASCAR Winston Racing Series facilities across the United States, an individual track championship for one of NASCAR's Touring Divisions is not. The fact that the drivers for two Touring Division series -- Busch North and Featherlite Modified -- are competing for these "championship-within-a-championship" titles is a tribute to the way things are done by the Bahre family.
Historically, NHIS track owner Bob Bahre has always tried to thank the teams for competing at his facilities, and he launched a touring series track championship a number of years ago when he owned the Oxford (Maine) Plains Speedway.
After selling the Pine Tree State short track and building the 1.058-mile facility in Loudon, Bahre continued his policy of rewarding drivers who performed well at his race track by setting up this unique pair of championships.
Dale Shaw of Center Conway, N.H., and Mike Stefanik of Coventry, R.I., lead their respective divisions going into the Farm Aid On CMT Doubleheader.
Shaw holds a scant 10-point lead over runner-up Brad Leighton of Center Harbor, N.H., in the Busch North Series while Stefanik is only 35 markers ahead of Reggie Ruggiero of Rocky Hill, Conn., -- the defending champion of the Featherlite Modified Series event -- on that side.
The $115,961 Farm Aid on CMT 100 for the Featherlite Modified Series is the series' 18th round and will be held at 1:10 p.m. on Saturday. Bud Pole Qualifying to set the 40-car starting field for the 100-lap race is set for 1 p.m. Friday. The series qualifying record at NHIS is 130.918 mph (29.093 seconds) set by Mike Ewanitsko on April 14, 1991. The 100-lap race record for the series is 90.556 mph (1 hour, 10 minutes and 6 seconds), set by Stefanik on May 31, 1997.
The event, which will be broadcast live on TNN: The Nashville Network will be the 28th Featherlite Modified Series race held at NHIS. Current series drivers with victories at NHIS are: Tim Connolly, Ewanitsko, Jan Leaty, Tony Hirschman (3), Ruggiero (6) and Stefanik (6). A total of 10 different drivers have won series races at NHIS.
The first Featherlite Modified Series race held at NHIS occurred on Sept. 2, 1990. Current series drivers who competed in that race include Tom Baldwin, Tom Bolles, S.J. Evonsion, Ewanitsko, Tony Ferrante Jr., Eddie Flemke, Hirschman, Carl Pasteryak, Ruggiero, Stefanik, Jamie Tomaino and Satch Worley.
