ROGELIO LOPEZ ACHIEVES A THIRD TOP-5 FINISH IN THE BUSCH EAST SERIES
SOUTH BOSTON, Virginia (June 3, 2007) - Telmex driver Rogelio Lopez got this Saturday night his third Top-5 finish in the NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch East Series, after competing in the first race of the Series at the 0.400-mile South Boston Speedway.
"This race result is good, is reasonable. We've got other fifth place in one of the most competitive NASCAR Series, and from the beginning we were among the top places. We were fourth in practice; the car performed very well, was stable enough and very consistent. In qualifying -that is just two laps, the car again performed well despite knowing that it was not going to be very fast for qualifying, even though the differences were just of thousands of a second. We knew that in the long runs we were going to do well with this car," the driver of the car No. 03 Telmex-Lucas Oil-Chevrolet said.
"We qualified sixth. It was a very close qualifying session, and in the race we've worked well. It really hurt us too many caution flags because the car was very fast in the long runs and also it hurt us that in some restarts we were on the outside and we did not have a car to race on the outside. We had to stay in the lower part," he said.
"We were working the entire race to keep the car in the lower part of the track to be in the leading group. Unfortunately towards the end NASCAR Officials did not pay enough attention in an accident featuring some lapped drives that occurred in front of us (the leading group), and they were practically two or three cars stopped in Turn 1, while we were still fighting for position (fourth) and several cars also were vying for improving their positions. Therefore, we could not brake and at the end we wrecked the car," the Mexican said.
"Fortunately, my Telmex/Lucas Oil team is prepared for this kind of situations. We have a backup car for the next week race that is at Stafford Springs. I think that this finish put us in contention for the championship, being second in the point standings, but we have to keep working to obtain better results and we can be in the Top-3 and win a race, that is what we are looking for," he said.
In the Busch East Series Championship Point Standings Rogelio Lopez is second with 625 points, just behind Joey Logano (664). Peyton Sellers is third with 595 points, followed by de Mike Olsen (584), Sean Caisse (566), and Bryon Chew with 562 points.
The Escuderia Telmex driver is also second in the Rookie of the Year standings with 34 points, just one point behind Joey Logano (35). Jesus Hernandez (23), Jamie Hayes (21) and Michelle Theriault (20) rounded out the Top-5.
