Charlotte, NC -- January 22, 2009 -- NASCAR executives announced today during NASCAR's annual Media Tour that 21-year-old Kristin Bumbera of Sealy, TX will drive for Hamilton Racing during the 2009 season. This is the second year that NASCAR has invited the hard-charging young female driver to participate in the Drive for Diversity program. Bumbera and team owner Bobby Hamilton Jr. have teamed up for a full season of competition in the NASCAR Camping World East Series where their goal is to win Rookie of the Year honors. This will be Bumbera's first full season in the Camping World Series having run a limited schedule last season in the western division of this NASCAR regional racing series. In just her first two appearances Bumbera turned many heads in Texas and California with 11th and 14th place finishes.
2009 will no doubt be a challenge for the young female driver from Texas, as she will compete on eleven different racetracks which she has never visited before. However working with veteran crew chief, Danny Gill, is an opportunity that Bumbera is looking forward to. Gill has lead many successful teams to victory lane with drivers such as Bobby Hamilton and Dennis Setzer.
"NASCAR's new "no-testing" rule has really set us back and handicapped us right off the bat this year. We were looking forward to testing at a few of the tracks ahead of time. But I'm always up to a challenge so we'll give it our best and make the most of every practice session they give us." Bumbera said with confidence.
Multiple sponsors will participate in Bumbera's program, including Coyote Ugly Saloon, Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores, Wide Open Performance, Inc. and Bumbera's Performance Associates. "I am sincerely appreciative of NASCAR's diversity efforts and it was important for me to pass onto younger drivers some of the experience and success I have been given and earned," said five-time NASCAR Nationwide Series winner Bobby Hamilton, Jr. "Kristin is the right fit for this team as we grow the company. It is our vision to add marketing partners that can come in at an entry level and grow with us as we grow our race team and we look forward to Kristin being a part of that growth."
"I am very excited to support the team and Kristin Bumbera in the Drive for Diversity program in 2009," said Coyote Ugly president and founder Liliana Lovell. "I have centered my personal and professional life with empowering women and Kristin embodies the hopes and dreams of every strong American woman!"
Bobby Hamilton Jr. is a well-known NASCAR driver with 305 NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Craftsman Truck Series starts who now adds the title NASCAR Team Owner to his repertoire. However he doesn't plan on hanging up his helmet anytime soon. He has also joined forces for 2009 to form Rensi -Hamilton Racing where he will once again be behind the wheel of the Nationwide Series #25.
Last year Bumbera drove for Golden State Racing in the NASCAR Whelan Late Model Series where she earned 2 wins, 12 top 5's and 14 top 10's and currently holds the Late Model track record at All American Speedway, Roseville, CA of 13.69 seconds. She also holds the Late Model track record at Monroe Motor Speedway, Monroe, LA at 14.99 seconds.
In addition to her full schedule driving the #94 for Hamilton Racing, Bumbera will be driving for her family-owned team, Next Generation Racing, in a few NASCAR Camping World Series West Division races beginning March 14th in Kyle, TX.
