Apparently Cole Whitt is a quick study. It took the 18-year-old development driver no more than a handful of laps to grasp the "smooth is fast" concept at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.

"You have to take a really patient driving style," he said. "You really have to slow down, hit your marks and be smooth. It's not about how fast you can go there. The slower and smoother you can be, the faster you'll go. It took me a little getting used to that, calming down and making some consistent laps made us go faster in the long run."

Whitt's K&N Pro Series East debut will come Saturday at Greenville — a half- mile track in the upstate of South Carolina. He tested the No. 84 Red Bull Toyota there March 16 to go along with a previous test at South Boston (Va.) Speedway, which is stop No. 2 on the K&N East schedule.

"This whole transition from open wheel to stock cars is going to be something new to me," Whitt said. "The longest race I've ever run in my life is 100 laps. Now, 150 laps is the shortest race we'll run all season. I'm going to have to learn to be patient and think about the long run because we have to be good at the end of the race, not just at the beginning."

The 2008 USAC National Midget champion, Whitt won a combined 17 races last season on the local and national levels. Most recently, he finished second in January's Chili Bowl Midget Nationals, but Saturday will be his first go- around in a stock car.
