Legend Ernie Irvan comes to PIR at The Baxter Auto Parts Portland Historic Races.
PORTLAND, Ore - May 27, 2002 - The Baxter Auto Parts Portland Historic Races, taking place July 12 through 14 at Portland International Raceway, has announced that NASCAR legend Ernie Irvan will sign autographs on the Saturday and Sunday of the event at 11:30 a.m. in the historic stock car pits.
During the course of his 12-year NASCAR career, Irvan achieved 15 NASCAR Winston Cup victories, 22 career NASCAR Winston Cup pole positions, and 68 top-five and 124 top-10 finishes. He is perhaps best known for surviving a horrific crash at Michigan Speedway in 1994. Despite extensive injuries, Irvan made a miraculous recovery and returned to racing at the end of the 1995 season with two top-10 performances. He retired from racing on Sept. 3, 1999. Irvan's famed 1993 Chevy Lumina #4 Kodak car will be at the event, along with two dozen other famous stock cars raced in the early 1990s,including Jeff Gordon's 1993 Chevy Lumina #24 Dupont Rainbow Warrior car, and Richard Petty's 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix #43 STP. Presented by Marathon Coach Co., these cars will be raced as a special feature group, and many will be available for hot lap rides as a charity fundraiser for the Children's Cancer Association.
Another of this year's main attractions will be a field of Can Am racecars. The Can Am Series, which began in 1966, is considered to be the last great international unlimited sports racing series where horsepower was ahead of aerodynamics and suspension know-how. With no upper limit on engine size and no minimum weight requirement, the cars of Can Am were the most powerful and fastest racecars of their era.
The Baxter Auto Parts Portland Historic Races features fun for the entire family with high-speed racing by more than 200 vintage and historic cars from the early 1930s to the 1970s. The event also presents more than 700 collector and specialty cars on display; a hot rod show; a vendor midway; an upscale food and wine pavilion; and a family zone.
The event runs Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Three-day admission is $40; Friday only is $10; Saturday or Sunday only is $25.
