Rockford Speedway's NASCAR Late Model and Grand National Sportsmen event tonight was marred by the death of a driver.

Al Papini died Sunday after crashing his car into the wall at Rockford Speedway, according to wire reports.

Papini, 41, who was airlifted from the track, was pronounced dead at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia said doctors think Papini suffered a ruptured aorta, but won't know for sure until an autopsy is performed Tuesday.

Papini was running third in the 40-lap late model feature when he ran head-on into the wall with seven laps remaining.

Rockford Speedway is in Rockford, Illinois -- it is a short track 1/4 mile oval with high banking.
