Altamahaw, NC (September 22, 2001) - Cam Strader of Wilson, NC drove the Wesson Cooking Oil/Peter Pan Peanut Butter Mercury Cougar to his 11th top five finish of the season Saturday night at the Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, North Carolina.
Strader, who leads the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series Championship Points battle, qualified in the fifth starting position, and finished in the third position.
"We had a great race car tonight," said Strader. "Sometimes you just get outrun. There's no real explanation for it. We aren't going to complain too much with a third place finish."
Strader's strong finish, coupled with a disappointing 16th place finish by Robert Huffman helped Strader to extend his point lead over Huffman to 159 points with just three races remaining in the season. Justin Hobgood won the event, and moved into second place in the point's standings. He trails Strader by 125 points.
It didn't take long for the action to begin. On lap 8, several cars including that of Robert Huffman got loose and crashed coming off turn four. Huffman was able to continue on with minor body damage.
On lap 42, another multi-car crash brought most of the front runners to pit road for a fuel stop. Strader returned to the racetrack in the third position, behind the entries of Jake Hobgood and Zack Brewer.
On lap 54, Mickey York's Pontiac was tagged in the rear causing him to spin. The result was a multi-car crash in turn 2 that collected several of the competitors and sent many of them to the garage area for the remainder of the event. Eric VanCleef, spun to avoid the York machine leaving Scott Weaver no where to go. Weaver's car collected VanCleef's machine in the driver's door, and was partially on top of VanCleef's machine when the cars came to rest. Robert Huffman was also involved and sustained serious front-end damage.
Several more minor cautions occurred throughout the event.
On lap 148, Jake Hobgood was spun when he was tagged from the rear coming off turn 2, and slammed the inside wall on the backstretch.
The clean up efforts resulted in a green-white-checkered finish. Justin Hobgood was able to hold off the advances of Shane Hmiel and Strader at the finish.
The 150-lap event lasted 1 hour 5 minutes and 32 seconds, and the average speed was slowed to 58.962mph due to 7 cautions for 64 laps.
The next event for the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series competitors is September 29th at the Coastal Plains Speedway in Jacksonville, NC. The Toyota Goody's Dash Series, presented by Wesson Cooking Oil and Peter Pan Peanut Butter.
