The southeast region of the United States continues to be wet and again the weather has affected NASCAR races. Delays in the Friday schedule have occurred due to rain at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The steady rain delayed the Busch Series on track activity this morning. The first practice was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. (ET), followed by Bud Pole qualifying at 1:45 p.m. with Happy Hour scheduled to commence at 5:30 p.m.

The Winston Cup teams are taking a 'weather break' in preparations for this afternoon's first practice session at 3:20 p.m., followed by Bud Pole qualifying at 7:05 p.m.

NASCAR officials have yet to release a revised schedule for today; however the trend has been to cancel practice in favor of a dry track and allowable time for qualifying.

An announcement should be forthcoming once the rain has stopped and the track drying time is determined.



UPDATE: 1:45 p.m.

Track drying efforts are underway in Atlanta, after a steady early morning downpour soaked the Atlanta area.

Busch Series practice set for 10:00 a.m. has been canceled, as well as Busch Bud pole qualifying which was set to begin at 1:45 p.m. . Owner points will set the field.

The weather situation will be reassessed at 3:00 p.m. today to see if Winston Cup Bud pole qualifying will be able to get underway as scheduled.

Goody's Dash activities have also been put on hold, while NASCAR resets the schedule and continues efforts to get the track race ready. If the Goody's Dash race goes off without incident this evening at 9:00 p.m. it will mark the first time in history that a handicapped driver has competed in a NASCAR sanctioned event. Birmingham, Alabama native, Ray Paprota makes his first start in the #10 Fourtech Racing Mercury. Paprota utilizes a new system, which allows him to control the throttle and brakes of his race car with his hands.

Rainy day activities included the marriage of Lee Gregory and Wendell Neal in victory lane this afternoon. Ward and Tabitha Burton served as best man and matron of honor for the nuptials. Burton, whose 41st birthday is today, was surprised after the ceremony with a cake in his honor courtesy of Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Track drying efforts continue, as NASCAR attempts to revise the schedule to fit in the Goody's Dash race, a practice for the Busch Series, Winston Cup practice, and Winston Cup Bud Pole qualifying An update from NASCAR is expected shortly.

NASCAR revises Atlanta schedule

NASCAR has rescheduled some of the day's events that have been hampered by inclement weather in the Atlanta area all day.

The Busch Series will now run their first practice from 3:50 to 4:40, with final practice being staged from 6:00 to 6:50.

The Winston Cup cars will take to the track from 4:45 to 5:55 for their first practice, and if the weather holds up, the Winston Cup series will begin qualifying at 7:05 p.m. EST.

Rains continues to fall, Winston Cup qualifying is on hold. Track drying efforts continue.



UPDATE: 8:00 p.m.

NASCAR cancels Winston Cup qualifying. The starting line up will be set by owner points.
