Mike Olsen Leads All The Way To Win Busch North Series Star 150 At Star Speedway; Second Straight Win Gives Him Point Lead Over Runner-Up Tracy Gordon
EPPING, N.H. - Mike Olsen led every lap to win the Star 150 at Star Speedway on Saturday night, capturing his second consecutive Busch North Series race and gaining the point lead. Tracy Gordon finished second in the race and also moved up to second in the standings, 59 points behind Olsen after six of 21 events.
Three-time champion Jamie Aube was third, with Dale Shaw and Dave Dion, both former Busch North Series title winners, fourth and fifth. Completing the top ten were Raybestos Rookie-of-the-Race Brian Hoar, Flowmaster Star of the Race David Darling, Dale Quarterley, Bryan Wall, and Barney McRae.
Nine caution flags for 69 laps slowed the pace, and several contenders experienced major setbacks. Former point leader Mike Johnson suffered engine trouble and was scored 24th, just ahead of Kelly Moore and two-time defending champion Brad Leighton.
Olsen qualified seventh, but started on the outside of the front row as the top eight redrew for starting positions. Dion started on the pole and dueled with Star favorite Paul Richardson for second until the pair tangled on lap 70, giving Gordon the runner-up spot. Richardson would finish 14th.
Another Star legend, Babe Branscombe, made his move to second just before the 100-lap mark and went for the lead on a restart, only to spin in turn three. Cars checking up behind him triggered a multi-car scramble which eventually led to a red flag for track cleanup. Shaw was now the runner-up and made a move under Olsen at the lap 120 restart, but couldn't take the lead and was shuffled back by Gordon and Aube.
McRae, in one of the best races of his long career, and sophomore driver Darling each held fifth in the closing stages, but Dion recovered from his earlier soin to take the spot in the final laps.
Gordon won the Bud Pole in the heat of the afternoon with a timing of 13.845 seconds at 65.005 miles per hour, although the top three second round qualifiers- Leighton, Johnson, and Bill Penfold- all were faster under cooler conditions. Olsen won the Gatorade Front Runner Award
Olsen heads for next Friday's CarQuest Auto Parts 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway with 989 points to 930 for Gordon. Johnson remains third with 901 markers.
