Kelly Moore Nets a Top-10 Finish in Final Oval Track Race of 2003 Season
Stafford Springs, CT -- Kelly Moore earned his 11th top-10 finish of the 2003 season on Sunday afternoon at Stafford Motor Speedway. Moore qualified his NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet Monte Carlo fourth fastest overall during the qualifying session held one week earlier. The fall final at Stafford Motor Speedway was postponed on two occasions due to inclement weather. With one race remaining, Moore sits third overall in the championship point standings and will have one last shot to take over the second spot from Mike Stefanik.
"Our car was decent, we had the opportunity to make some adjustments when we got back to the race shop last week and that helped tremendously," Moore said.
Moore and his Bill Dodge Auto Group/Shell Rotella T team haven't had as dominant a car as they've had at Stafford in previous years, an issue that the 1995 Busch North Series champion attributes to the type of tire the touring series must run at Stafford.
"The tire compound is a lot harder and at a track like Stafford your not able to get the grip that you really need," said Moore. "I prefer a setup that's on the loose side but with this tire is too hard and you do a lot of sliding in the turns"
Mike Johnson captured the victory at Stafford, his first win of the season and while he had some competition up front at various moments, Moore wasn't able to mount a challenge and capture a win on the last oval event of the season.
"We moved up to third pretty quick and ran there quite awhile, but past the halfway point my car just started getting loose and the back end was all over the place entering the turns," commented Moore.
Fighting with the lapped traffic was also a challenge for Moore and on two separate occasions these battles cost Moore a few positions on the grid. Moore battled his way back but wasn't able to get back into the top-5 on the track.
"There were some good battles with lapped traffic, not much give and take out there at all," said Moore.
The SPEED Channel production team was present and taped the event for broadcast on October 11.
The final Busch North Series event will be a road course race at Lime Rock Park in Western Connecticut. The race is scheduled for Saturday, October 11.
