Mike Stefanik Returns to Busch North Series in New England 125 at NHIS on Sat., July 21; First Appearance for Two-Time Champion Since 1998 Title Season
LOUDON, N.H. (July 16, 2001) - Two-time Busch North Series, NASCAR Touring champion Mike Stefanik will return to full-bodied stock car action in the New England 125 at New Hampshire International Speedway on Saturday, July 21. Stefanik is set to drive a Chevrolet fielded by Albany, N.Y. car dealer Bryan Goewey, who raced in the Busch North Series himself in the early 1990's.
Mike Greci is listed as crew chief for the GE Sealants & Adhesives #20 entry. Greci was the car owner for Stefanik's 1997 and 1998 Busch North Series championship runs, and also served as crew chief in 1998. Working with Greci will be Scott Zipadelli, brother of 1997 crew chief Greg Zipadelli who went on to Winston Cup stardom with Joe Gibbs Racing.
The car will carry the same black and neon yellow paint scheme seen on the Goewey-owned, GE-sponsored DIRT Modified car driven regularly by Jack Johnson and in special events by Tony Stewart. Currently, Stefanik is scheduled to compete in the BNS races at NHIS in July and September, but other events in both Busch North Series and Busch Series, Grand National Division may be added.
Stefanik currently owns ten Busch North Series victories and seven Bud Poles, ranking eighth in each category. His last Busch North Series start was a victory in the final race of the 1998 season at Lime Rock Park. He left New England to become the 1999 rookie of the year on the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and competed in the Busch Series, Grand National Division in 2000. In 2001 he races regularly for car owner Art Barry in the Featherlite Modified Series, where he is the all-time leading winner and currently leads in the point standings toward his fifth championship.
In 1997, Stefanik won both Featherlite Modified and Busch North Series titles, becoming the only driver to .win two NASCAR Touring championships in one year. He then repeated the feat in 1998. Stefanik will, of course, be pulling double duty at NHIS as he has so many times in the past. He owns one Busch North Series win at NHIS in April 1995.
Speaking from his Coventry, R.I., shop as he put the finishing touches on the Goewey car, Stefanik talked about his BNS return. "It'll be like old home day with a lot of familiar faces on the team," he said. Turning to the changes that have swept across the series his since his title years, he added, "There will be the usual guys that have always run good, and of course Mike Olsen's picked up his program and I've never raced against Mike Johnson. We're not going to race against any one person. You have to race them all, We just want to be one of the guys up front so we can kick this program off in fine fashion."
Both the series in which Stefanik is entered will have their practice and Bud Pole Qualifying on Thursday, July 19. The Featherlite Modified Series race is on Friday, July 20, with the Busch North Series New England 125 on Saturday, July 21.
