New Jersey's Joey McCarthy came to Star Speedway on Saturday night with the Mannings USA-sponsored McCarthy/Pritchard Motorsports team. After a week spent suffering from the effects of the flu, McCarthy took to the quarter-mile track with some trepidation.

The first round of qualifying found the team lacking speed, but going back out for the second round of time trials placed the team in the feature event in 21st place. The team turned to preparing their car for the feature event which was run in extremely hot conditions.

As the race went on, both McCarthy and his car were experiencing ill effects from the heat. McCarthy's water bottle emptied on him, and his car's water temperature was also too high. Under just about every yellow McCarthy ducked onto pit road trying to get both himself and the car cooled down. Once on the track, McCarthy dodged the wrecks and kept the car on the track, finishing 21st.

"All the water ran out of my water bottle," he said afterwards. "The hose fell down and the bottle emptied out. The car wasn't doing much better, it was running 250 degrees water temperature. We kept coming in trying to cool it off and cool me off. I would have been fine, I just couldn't physically drive the car. It was probably a top twelve car, we just can't get everything to click on one night."

Despite the frustrations from Star, the team is looking forward to going to Connecticut's Stafford Motor Speedway on Saturday, bringing "Wilson", the car that McCarthy drove to a 13th place finish at New Hampshire International Speedway in May.
