MOORESVILLE, NC (June 24, 2003) - Although the Tops Racing Team's race shop is located in North Carolina, driver Paul Wolfe will be making a homecoming of sorts when he visits Holland Speedway June 28 for the NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch North Series' sixth race of the 2003 season.
Holland is approximately 35 miles south of Buffalo in Western New York, the home area of Tops Friendly Markets, the team's primary sponsor. Associate sponsors Colton RV and New Era Cap are also located in the area. The Tops Racing Team has several New York State connections as well. Wolfe himself is a native of Milford in Central New York and the team's car owners are Long Island-born NASCAR veterans Tommy Baldwin and Eddie D'Hondt.
"Western New York NASCAR fans will finally get to see the Tops Dodge on the track," Wolfe said. "It is always special when I come back to race in my home state, especially when our sponsor has such a strong presence here."
Before it hits the track on Saturday, the Tops Dodge will appear at two separate Tops stores in the Buffalo area: on Friday, June 27 from 2-6 p.m. at the Tops in Springville and on Saturday, June 28 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Tops in Arcade.
Currently, Wolfe is 15th in Busch North Series points after a string of bad luck in the last three races. After top tens in the first two events, Wolfe cut a tire at Lake Erie Speedway May 18 (finished 17th), was caught up in a chain reaction accident at Beech Ridge on June 14 (finished 24th) and broke an oil line at Stafford on June 20 (finished 29th).
"We have had some tough luck thus far this year," D'Hondt said. "I also know we have good people in place that are capable of turning this thing around. We just have to keep digging, learning and adjusting as we go."
The Sonoco 150 will be taped to air on television by SPEED Channel (Adelphia Digital Cable Channel 122, Time Warner Digital Cable Channel 103) on Saturday, July 5 at 11 a.m. Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and the race at 8 p.m. Holland will also run its regular NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing program.
Tops Markets, LLC is one of six retail operating companies under Ahold USA, one of the leading supermarket operations in the U.S. Tops currently operates 159 Tops Friendly Markets and 204 convenience stores in New York, Pennsylvania and northeast Ohio. The Tops Racing Team and TBRN's associate sponsors for the Holland race are Georgia-Pacific, Brawny, Dixie and Colton RV.
The No. 9 Tops Dodge is operated by Tommy Baldwin Racing North (TBRN), a subsidiary of Tommy Baldwin Racing. TBRN is co-owned by Baldwin and D'Hondt.
