DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 12, 2001) - With the addition of post-season awards, 2001 Busch North Series champion Mike Olsen's 2001 winnings reached $185,408. Olsen led a record seven drivers into the six-figure bracket following the 15th season for NASCAR's premier full-bodied touring series in the northeastern United States. Olsen combined $82,473 in race purses with $85,435 in point funds awards, plus the $10,000 Bud Pole Award and the $7,500 Gatorade Front Runner Award to reach his final total.
Mike Johnson was second in 2001 money winnings as well as second in the final Busch North Series point standings. Johnson's total was $124,362. Also topping the $100,000 mark were Dale Shaw, Bryan Wall, Dale Quarterley, and Kelly Moore, who finished third through sixth in the standings, and two-time defending champion Brad Leighton, who wound up ninth in points, but was the leading race winner with three triumphs and also topped the circuit in money from race purses at over $87,000.
It marked the first time Olsen, Johnson, Wall, and Quarterley had exceeded the $100,000 threshold, but it was the sixth straight year for Leighton. Shaw reached six figures for the fourth time and Moore for the third time. Moore pushed his career-leading money total near the $1.2 million mark, while Shaw approached $900,000.
The top 20 drivers shared in the $427,125 Busch North Series point fund. A total of 86 drivers participated in the series, racing for over $2.4 million in posted awards.
In 2002, the Busch North Series will compete in 19 races at 14 tracks in eight states from Maine to Delaware, including four appearances with the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. The season opener is set for Sunday, April 21, at the Lee USA Speedway in Lee, N.H.
