Minersville, PA - July 28, 2000 - Jeff Strunk of Bethel, PA, returned to his championship form of the '90s at Big Diamond Raceway to capture the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified feature on Friday night. Strunk piloted the Motor Truck Equipment Company/Kenworth/Cummins W9 to his first win of 2000 at Big Diamond, moving into sole possession of third position on the track's career win list with 23. Gary Hager of Stewartsville, NJ, put on a amazing charge in the closing laps to take the lead coming off the final turn, earning his seventh overall and sixth NASCAR Exide ShorTrack Sportsman feature win of the year while Dean Ulsh of Auburn, PA took his second Accel Roadrunner feature win of the year. Rich Stankiewicz of Reading, PA started on the pole in the NASCAR WRS Modified 25-lap feature and held the point over Craig Whitmoyer (Hamburg, PA) and Tim Fitzpatrick (Minersville, PA) until lap five when he spun coming off the second turn. Whitmoyer took the point in the ELCO Machine and Tool but paced the field for only one lap before Shawn Reimert (Oley, PA) moved the Kochel Equipment Company 58S into the lead with an inside move off turn four. Reimert, who started eighth, was followed by Dennis Bailey (Kutztown, PA) on lap later, Jeff Strunk moved the W9 from his tenth starting spot to third by lap 8 and then got by Bailey for second one lap later. Strunk used a outside move to pass Reimert coming off turn two on lap 11 to take the lead while Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville, PA) and Keith Hoffman (Whitehall, PA) moved by Bailey for third and fourth. Reimert, still solidly in second, had his 58S fail with 20 laps in the books moving Swinehart right on Strunk's tail for the restart followed by Hoffman, Craig Von Dohren (Barto, PA) and Duane Howard (Oley, PA). But the yellow offered no help to the challengers as Jeff Strunk held on for the win. Ray Swinehart ran second in his Dames Chevrolet 33 followed by Keith Hoffman, Craig Von Dohren (who started 23rd in his first Big Diamond start of the year in the BRB Racing 114), Duane Howard, Jim Hauer (Lebanon, PA), Smokey Warren (Jonestown, PA), Kerry Kratz (Bechtelsville, PA), Dennis Bailey and Tim Fitzpatrick. Heat winners were Stankiewicz, Hoffman, Fitzpatrick and Kyle Weiss while consolation honors went to Warren and Scott Albert of Fredericksburg, PA. It looked like a long evening for NASCAR Exide ShorTrack Series Northeast Region point leader Gary Hager. He was unable to advance through the first Sportsman heat on a wet track surface, qualified through the consolation and then was involved in a lap six feature crash after advancing nine spots to tenth. Some fast pit work on the front suspension put him back on the track, at the rear of the 20-lap feature field. While this was happening John Deatrich, Jr. of Pottsville, PA kept the Yarnell Brothers Contracting 25 out front with pressure from Rick Rutt (Phillipsburg, NJ), who moved his Northern Lights 57X from seventh to second by lap two. After the Rutt looked several times to the inside of Deatrich and they ran side-by-side several times, Rutt took the lead on lap 8 with an inside move down the frontstretch. Ed Scott (New Tripoli, PA) took second from Deatrich on lap 11 and Jeff Gray (Grantville, PA) grabbed third on lap 13. Hager methodically moved through traffic and first cracked the top ten on lap 10. He was eighth on lap 12 when the final yellow flew resulting in a single file restart. With only five laps to go Hager took fifth while Ed Scott began seriously pressuring Rutt for the lead. Just when it look like he was destined to finish fifth, Hager focused on the outside groove on lap 17 and began to make major gains. Shawn Fitzpatrick (Pottsville, PA) fell to Hager's charge on lap 18 as did Gray early on lap 19. Hager caught the leaders at the west end of the speedway and went by Scott before the white flag flew just as Scott looked like he was ready to make his move on Rutt for the win. After short-circuiting Scott's run, Hager drew even with Rutt entering turn three on the final lap and the leader ran him all the way up to the wall coming off turn four to no avail. Hager completed a thrilling three lap charge to move from fifth to take the win. Gary Hager took the win in his Johnny's Truck Stop 44 followed by a disappointed Rick Rutt, Ed Scott, Shawn Fitzpatrick, Jeff Gray, John Deatrich, John Patchoski (Scranton, PA), Billy Moyer, Jr. (Pine Grove, PA), Ryan Bauer (Bethlehem, PA), and Luke Wagner (Hershey, PA), Heat winners were Deatrich, Donn Edgar (Lehighton, PA), and Joe Biasi (New Ringgold, PA) while Hager captured the consolation. Marty Purcell (Pottsville, PA) led the opening seven laps of the 15-lap Accel Roadrunner main event until Dean Ulsh took charge and never looked back. Defending track champion, Ulsh, guided his Blue Ridge Hotel to his second straight win over Chris Evitts (Orwigsburg, PA) in the Deka Batteries 24, Marc Berzowski (Minersville, PA), Barry Schrader (Orwigsburg, PA) and Cory Renninger (Minersville, PA). Heat winners were Marley Whitcomb (Muir, PA) and Renninger. This Friday, August 4, the United Racing Club Sprint cars make their only appearance of the year at Big Diamond Raceway under the banner of Carquest Auto Parts, The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modifieds and the Accel Roadrunners will also be on the card. The NASCAR EXIDE ShorTrack Series Sportsman get the week off before returning in two weeks for a Twin-20 program. As part of the August 4 card, former modified and street stock driver and current Big Diamond roadrunner technical inspector Fran Purcell, Jr. will wed Dianne Devers at the speedway.
