Minersville, PA - June 2 - Tom Pompei of Sellersville, PA captured his first career NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified win at Big Diamond Raceway on Exide Batteries / Checkered Flag Fan Club Night on Friday. The start of the racing card was delayed 20-minute due to reconditioning of the track due to the rain that passed through the area between 6 and 7 o'clock but the entire four division racing card was completed in 3-1/2 hours after starting the first heat. Joe Biasi of New Ringgold, PA took his win of 2000 in the NASCAR Exide ShorTrack Series Sportsman and rookie Accel Roadrunner racer, Marty Shappell of Pottsville, PA, took his first career win. The visiting BCRA Legends by Antonini Radiators saw Butch Brough of Newville, PA take the 15-lap main event. Former 358 Sprint driver and current Big Diamond modified rookie, Mike Enders of Halifax, PA, took the early lead in the 25-lap NASCAR WRS Modified feature in the Roy Wiest-owned 2W. That lead was short-lived as the engine in the 2W erupted in flames on the backstretch before the third lap could be completed. Tom Pompei put the Mayer's Well Drilling / Universal Bakery Service 100 into the lead from his second starting spot. While running second, Scranton's Larry Kelleher spun in turn one with 5 laps complete, collecting fourth place Barry Readinger (Fleetwood, PA), last week's winner Tom Umbenhauer (Richland, PA), Kerry Kratz (Bechtelsville, PA), Kyle Weiss (Hamburg, PA), Randy Bailey (Kutztown, PA) and Duane Howard (Oley, PA). This moved Smokey Warren (Jonestown, PA) into second. More problems on the restart saw Jim Hauer (Lebanon, PA), Randy Bailey, Tim Fitzpatrick (Minersville, PA), and Howard tangle in turn one. From there it was all green flag racing with Tom Pompei guiding his Lombardo-powered, Troyer 100 to the win over Smokey Warren, Shawn Reimert (Oley, PA), Keith Hoffman (Whitehall, PA), Terry Meitzler (Kutztown, PA), Glenn Strunk (Bechtelsville, PA), Jeff Strunk (Bethel, PA), Kyle Weiss, Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville, PA) and Meme DeSantis (Blandon, PA). Heat winners Ron Mawson, Jr. (Pittston, PA), Larry Kelleher, Glenn Strunk and Pompei took heat wins while Hoffman and Scott Albert (Fredericksburg, PA) captured the consolation honors. Joe Biasi moved his Busch Beer/Burns and Yost Competition Engines B1 into the lead at the drop of the green over pole-sitter, Tom Cremer (Sinking Spring, PA) in the NASCAR EXIDE ShorTrack Sportsman 20-lap feature. Shawn Fitzpatrick (Pottsville, PA) ran second until lap 13 when Terry Bensinger (Schuylkill Haven, PA) took the position as Gary Hager (Stewartsville, NJ) and Dave Dissinger (Mohrsville, PA) tangled while battling for fourth leaving Jim Reppert (Hamburg, PA), Lenny Leibold, Jr. (Jonestown, PA) and John Heckler (Hatfield, PA) with no where to go but into the tangle. John Dietrich, Jr. (Pottsville, PA) overtook Bensinger for runner-up on lap 14 and held it until the final lap when Hager battled back from the rear to nip him for second at the wire. Biasi took the $500 win plus the $100 bonus from the 901 Pub for defeating four-time 2000 winner, Gary Hager. Hager did take second followed by Dietrich, John Patchoski (Scranton, PA), Brent Boyer (Bloomsburg, PA), Bensinger, Ryan Bauer (Bethlehem, PA), Leibold, Billy Moyer, Jr. (Pine Grove, PA), and Ed Scott (New Tripoli, PA). Heat winners were John Heckler, Tom Brennan (Pottsville, PA), and Biasi while Ricky Rutt (Phillipsburg, NJ) was the consolation winner. Russ Smith of Reading, PA, who was the Big Diamond Modified (then called Limited Sportsman) track champion in 1973, took the early lead in the Antonini Radiator BCRA Legend 15-lap main. Another modified pilots from many years past, Harry Garber (Barto, PA) took the point on lap 3 with Butch Brough of Newville, PA applying the pressure after starting seventh. Garber refused to yield until he spun coming off turn two on lap 13. This put Brough on top and he went on to win over Ray Scigowski (Commack, NY), Tim Henry (Schnecksville, PA), Jim Baker (Jessup, PA), Brian Levan (Fleetwood, PA), Dale Barrall (Nazareth, PA), John Troyan (Milford, PA), Russ Smith, Zack Dunkelberger (Newtown, PA), and John Schirk (Spring Mount, PA). Heat winners were Baker and Scigowski. Marty Shappell of Pottsville, PA certainly did not look like a rookie as he passed Ken Eckert for the lead on the opening lap of the NASCAR Accel Roadrunner 15-lapper and then held off the repeated challenges of defending point champion, Dean Ulsh (Auburn, PA) for his first career win. Dean Ulsh did finish second trailed by Marc Berzowski (Minersville, PA), Dale Hartz (Hamburg, PA), Steve Fessler, Ken Eckert, Mike Allar, Robert Fritz, and John Oswald. This Friday, June 9, is Tremont's Country Chevrolet Night at Big Diamond Raceway. NASCAR's Winston Racing Series Modifieds, Exide ShorTrack Sportsman and Accel Roadrunners will be in action with the Modifieds going in the special Country Chevrolet 50 paying $3500-to-win. Also the Northern Lights NASCAR Busch Grand National show car of Jeff Burton will be on display with fans being given collector cars of the Northern Lights Jeff Burton #9 as well at the main gate. Gates open at 6pm with the first heat set for 8 o'clock.
