Rain stops Big Diamond NASCAR racing action; modified spring 50 set for this Friday, May 24.

Minersville, PA - May 17 - Although weather forecasters throughout the day indicated rain was not expected to hit Big Diamond Raceway until 10PM or later, rain began falling shortly after 6:30 and forced track officials to cancel the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series program presented by Dodge.

The NASCAR Modifieds, Sportsman and Roadrunners will now next compete on the 3/8-mile Forestville oval on Friday night, May 24, at 8PM. The card will include regular racing cards for the Sportsman Stocks and Roadrunners plus the first Modified special of the season, the Spring 50, paying $4000-to-win.

Racing fans will be able to kick-off the holiday weekend right with the big Spring 50 at Big Diamond without missing the big races on television featuring the NASCAR Busch Grand Nationals from Charlotte on Saturday or the Indianapolis 500 and the Winston Cup World 600 on Sunday. And the Monday holiday parades and picnics will also be able to be scheduled on the long weekend following the Big Diamond Modified spectacular as fans will not need to view tape of the big television races either.

Leading the list of stars looking to cash in on the first big payday at Big Diamond this year are the four feature winners thus far this season, Kyle Weiss of Hamburg, PA; Meme DeSantis of Temple, PA; Shawn Reimert of Oley, PA and Duane Howard of Oley, PA. Strong challenges should come from Keith Hoffman of Whitehall, PA; Craig Von Dohren of Barto, PA; Jeff Strunk of Bethel, PA; Todd Burley of Spencerport, NY; Terry Meitzler of Kutztown, PA; Steve Bottcher of Lehighton, PA; Rick Laubach of Quakertown, PA; and Ray Swinehart of Bechtelsville, PA as well as over 20 other Big Diamond regular stars and a few non-regulars looking to chase the increased payoff like past track champion, Paul Koch of Neffs, PA.

Many of these competitors will get an extra opportunity to prepare their cars for the racing this Friday and for events in weeks to come this Tuesday evening.

The first Big Diamond Raceway Open Practice Night is scheduled for Tuesday night, May 21, at 7:30. Any and all divisions of racing cars will be permitted to participate in this open practice with pit admission set at $15.00. In addition to the weekly Modified, Sportsman and Roadrunner cars it is possible that some of the touring divisions, with dates at Big Diamond later this year, will have some cars on hand including the MACS Super Late Models, 410 Sprints, URC 360 Sprints and KARS 358 Sprints. Also a number of pure stocks have also indicated they plan to attend.

Fans are invited to observe the Tuesday practice night without charge.

This Friday night, May 24, Big Diamond will open the stands at 6PM for an 8PM start. Action will feature the Modifieds in the Spring 50, the Sportsman Stocks and the Roadrunners in NASCAR Weekly Racing Series action presented by Dodge.
