Minersville, PA - July 19 - The racing program scheduled for Friday night, July 19th, at Big Diamond Raceway was canceled by rain. The event was scheduled to feature the United Racing Club Sprint Cars along with Big Diamond's NASCAR Modifieds, and NASCAR Roadrunners. The United Racing Club Sprint Cars will return to Big Diamond on August 23.
Although overcast all evening, rain did not hit the speedway until cars were already on the track for warm-ups. Many teams chose not to leave their pit areas and many did not unload, even though they were called to the track, as they anticipated heavy rain. The track was near ready but without an adequate number of cars on the track, the surface was still loose enough that the steady rain quickly turned the surface into a project that would have taken at least an hour and a half to two hours after the rain halted. The steady, but not heavy, rain lingered an additional 45 minutes after the event was called at 8 o'clock.
This Friday night, July 26th, at Big Diamond Raceway will feature the NASCAR Modifieds, the KARS 358 Sprints and the Roadrunners. Racing starts at 8PM. The KARS 358 Sprints will replace the NASCAR Sportsman. The Sportsman will return on Friday, August 2.
The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified racing at Big Diamond has turned into a showdown for the championship between four of the divisions best, defending champion Keith Hoffman of Whitehall, PA; past champion Duane Howard of Oley, PA; all-time leading feature winner, Craig Von Dohren of Barto, PA; and the leading 2002 Pennsylvania modified feature winner, Meme DeSantis of Temple, PA.
But not to be over-shadowed are feature winners Shawn Reimert of Oley, PA and Kyle Weiss of Hamburg, PA; and strong regulars Terry Meitzler of Kutztown, PA; Steve Bottcher of Lehighton, PA, Jack Hartnett of Telford, PA, Kevin Hartnett of Perkasie, PA, Rick Schaffer of Woxall, PA, Tom Pompei of Sellersville, PA, Barry Readinger of Fleetwood, PA and many others.
On the KARS Sprint side, the Chad Layton win on June 16 was a thriller with Layton catching leader Dale Hammaker very late and making the pass for the win in turn three on the final lap using the outside groove. Layton was trailed at the finish by Hammaker, Adrian Sheaffer, Richcreek, Tony Smolenyak, Tim Long, Jeff Rohrbaugh, Bob Beidleman, Rick Horn and Cory Haas.
On Tuesday night, July 30th, there is an open practice session at Big Diamond opened to any and all racing divisions with no membership required. Practice is to start at 7:30PM. A number of late model teams have indicated they will join the divisions, already benefiting from these sessions, to prepare for the MACS Late Model "Black Gold 50" at Big Diamond on Sunday, August 4.
