Minersville, PA - June 22 - Rain and violent weather forced officials at Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville, PA to cancel the Friday, June 22 racing card slated to feature the NASCAR Winston Racing Series Modifieds, NASCAR ShorTrack Sportsman and NASCAR Roadrunners. But fans will not have to wait a week for more action as the 410 Super Sprints make only their fourth appearance ever at Big Diamond on Tuesday night, June 26, along with the Sportsman Stocks as part of CARQUEST Auto Parts PA Sprint Speedweek.
The Tuesday night, June 26, appearance of the powerful 410 Super Sprints as part of CARQUEST Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek 2001 is one date that has been circled on fans' calendars since last winter. And Big Diamond provides a unique opportunity for racing purists as a track that normally does not run the sprinters. There can be absolutely no question of the event's neutrality as there are no local track favorites and there is no touring group involved. No provisionals provided or qualifiers guaranteed. Just good, hammer down racing where the drivers qualify and race the old fashioned way. They earn it!
But Greg Hodnett, of Memphis, Tennessee, must be the early favorite of the odds-makers as his York-based Apple Motorsports Team of Bob Stewart is undefeated in Big Diamond 410 Sprint action. The red Apple 12 is the only 410 Sprint Car to appear in the Big Diamond winner circle ever, winning events with drivers Fred Rahmer, Greg Hodnett, and Tyler Walker. Hodnett, is back in the 12 after a year with the World of Outlaws and is ready to extend the streak. But stars like Rahmer, Lance Dewease, Sean Michael, Don Kreitz, Todd Shaffer, the Middleswarth Potato Chip team of Keith Kauffman and Todd Hestor, Curt Michael, Len Thompson and Dave Ely are just a few rivals expected to offer resistance.
On Friday, June 29, the NASCAR Modifieds, Sportsman and Roadrunners will be in action on Dairy Association Night. There will also be a very special Meet the Drivers/Big Diamond Be a Reader program. Between 6PM and 7:15PM, modified driver Duane Howard with his 126, Sportsman driver/school teacher/disk jockey, Shawn Fitzpatrick and his 102 and Roadrunner racer/police officer Mike Allar and his 22 will read a few books to their young fans as meet them and sign autographs.
On Tuesday night, July 3, Big Diamond hosts the annual Georgie Stevenson Memorial 50 for Modifieds. The Stevenson Memorial is dedicated to the memory of Georgie Stevenson, who dedicated his short life to helping others. With the new Tuesday night date and the $4000 top prize, a few invaders are expected to take on the already strong field of Big Diamond Modified stars. And many competitors have historically supported this memorial event simply in honor the efforts of Georgie and the continuing efforts of his family to help children stricken with serious diseases and their families. The Roadrunners will also be on the card that carries a 7:30 starting time. Both divisions will be running for Big Diamond NASCAR points in this event.
