Minersville, PA - June 1 - Rain forced officials at Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville, PA to cancel tonight's (Friday, June 1) racing card slated to feature the Super Sportsman, NASCAR Winston Racing Series and NASCAR Roadrunners.

This Super Sportsman event will not be rescheduled so the super sportsman now will only make one appearance at Big Diamond in 2001 on West Side Wood Products and the Dark n' Go Tanning Salon Night on August 3 as part of a three division card with the NASCAR Modifieds and Roadrunners.

This Friday, June 8, the NASCAR ShorTrack Sportsman will return to the racing schedule with the NASCAR Modifieds and NASCAR Roadrunners. The sportsman will compete in a pair of 15-lap features while the modifieds will have a 25-lap main event culminate their night of racing and the roadrunners, a 15-lap main event.

But three nights before that racing card will be Big Diamond Raceway's second mid-week open practice session Tuesday night, June 5, starting at 7 PM. The test session is open to the track's weekly Modified Stock Cars, Sportsman Stock cars and Roadrunners as well at other classes that may or may not be scheduled to appear at the speedway this season such as Super Sportsman, Late Model Stocks, Street Stocks and Sprint Cars. Plans call for hot lapping on the banked, 3/8th-mile oval to start at 7 PM and tentatively end at 9:30 PM. The session may be extended if necessary to 10 PM. The main spectator gates will also be open with concessions open with a limited menu being available. Fans will be admitted FREE to the spectator areas.

Dave Dissinger of Mohrsville, PA is one Sportsman driver looking forward to the Twin-15s on the 8th. Dave has apparently overcome some personal physical maladies over the pasr two years to return to the dominant role he held when Big Diamond began running the sportsman cars. Dave, in his first full season back at Big Diamond since 1998, has three wins in five tries thus far in 2001 at Big Diamond with only Ed Scott of New Tripoli, PA and Shawn Fitzpatrick of Branchdale, PA able to snatch feature wins away from the "gentle giant."

But they have not been the only two drivers to give Dave all he can handle thus far. Newcomers Mike Schane (Hamlin, PA) and Chris Clemens (Coopersburg, PA), Tom Brennan (Pottsville, PA), Joe Biasi, Jr. (Tamaqua, PA), John Heckler (Hatfield, PA), Brad Force (Sellersville, PA), Jeff Graby (Grantville, PA), Luke Wagner (Hershey, PA), Scott Singley (Upper Dublin, NJ), Billy Moyer, Jr. (Pine Grove, PA), Randy Mohn (Fredericksburg, PA), and John Deatrich, Jr. (Pottsville, PA) have all run strong this season.

Duane Howard of Oley, PA has taken three of the five $2000 feature event wins this season in the Big Spring Car Wash #126 owned by Glenn Hyneman in Big Diamond Raceway NASCAR Weekly Racing Series action. He leads the Big Diamond point standings and also ranks second in the Northeast Region of the NASCAR WRS standings.

But the 2000 Big Diamond Raceway modified champion, Keith Hoffman of Whitehall, PA, plans to have something to say about the 2001 title. In the most recent race at Big Diamond, Hoffman and the Bashore Trucking team surprisingly parked their 2001 Troyer #5 car and brought last year's car, which is now the number 4 being raced by Todd Bashore at Grandview Speedway on Saturday nights.

At first there was speculation that the effort was to try to get the #4 back on track, as Todd has not enjoyed success in 2001 in the car. But actually the Hoffman-Bashore brain trust was looking to compare last year's car to this year's car and how each performed on the Big Diamond 3/8th mile dirt. The 2001 car has run fine but has yet to carry Keith to the winner's circle. With Duane Howard getting out of the gate so quickly, the defending champions plan to leave no stone unturned in looking for an edge.

Jeff Strunk of Bethel, PA and Terry Meitzler of Kutztown, PA have single feature victories but other challengers looking to crack the win list include Craig Von Dohren (Barto, PA), Meme DeSantis (Temple, PA), Jimmy Hauer (Lebanon, PA), Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville, PA), Barry Readinger (Fleetwood, PA), Dennis Bailey (Kutztown, PA), newcomers Jerry Higbie, Jr. (Slate Hill, NY), and Johnny Ray (Reading, PA), Mr. Excitement - Bobby Trapper (Scranton, PA), Glenn Strunk (Bechtelsville, PA), Kyle Weiss (Hamburg, PA) and Tom Umbenhauer (Richland, PA).
