Vern Bliss Maintains Lead In The Northeast Region Of The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 31, 2001) - Vern Bliss of Arcade, N.Y., continues to lead in the Competition Performance Index (CPI) standings in the Northeast Region of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series. Bliss, who competes in the Late Model Pro Stock division at Holland (N.Y.) International Speedway, has seven victories this season. Bliss also has 11 top-five and 12 top-ten finishes in 12 starts.

Keith Hoffman of Whitehall, Pa., has held onto second in the region. Hoffman, who competes in the Modified division on the clay oval at Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville, Pa., collected his second victory of the season this past weekend. Hoffman has 11 top-five and 12 top-ten finishes in 13 starts at the .375-mile dirt oval. Hoffman holds a slim margin over Duane Howard of Oley, PA in the Big Diamond Raceway standings with Craig Von Dohren of Barto, PA also within striking range of the title. The is important to note, as Howard has a slightly higher CPI than Hoffman and thus could be a big a threat to Vern Bliss as Hoffman is currently.

Mark Cottone of McKeesport, Pa., has jumped to third in the regional standings. Cottone, who competes in the Late Model division at Motordrome Speedway in Smithton, Penn., has scored two victories this season. Cottone has collected 10 top-five and 11 top-ten finishes in 12 starts at the .250-mile speedway. Rick Groetsch of North Ridgeville, Ohio, Lorain County Speedway in Amherst, Ohio; J.R. Kent of Horseheads, N.Y., Chemung (N.Y.) Speedrome; T.J. Potrzebowski of Elmira, N.Y., Spencer Speedway in Williamson, N.Y.; Neil Brown of Acme, Pa., Jennerstown (Pa.) Speedway; Kirk Alexander of West Swanzey, N.H., Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, N.H., and John Fortin of Holtsville, N.Y., Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway round out the top nine in the first tier of the Competition Performance Index (CPI) standings in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Northeast Region.

The regional champions will be decided following the conclusion of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series season on September 16. The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series national championship will then be determined by a ranking of the regional champions using the Competition Performance Index (CPI). The top-50 drivers as rated by the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series CPI in the Northeast Region for the week of July 30 follow.
