Big Diamond open practice on Tuesday, June 25; any divisions, no membership required.
Minersville, PA - June 20 - The second Big Diamond Raceway Open Practice Night is scheduled for Tuesday night, June 25, at 7:30. No membership is required and any and all divisions of racing cars will be permitted to participate in this open practice with pit admission set at $15.00 to cover insurance.
In addition to the weekly Modified, Sportsman and Roadrunner cars it is possible that some of the touring divisions, with dates at Big Diamond later this year, will have some cars on hand including the MACS Super Late Models, 410 Sprints, URC 360 Sprints and KARS 358 Sprints. In fact it will be the last opportunity for any 410 Sprint, looking to get a jump on the competition, to get in practice prior to next Tuesday's PA Sprint Speedweek show at Big Diamond.
The practice session will be scheduled by division and car counts. A rotation will be set starting with Modifieds followed by Sportsman and other divisions as necessary. That rotation will continue throughout the night with the number of laps per division increasing with each rotation. Practice will continue until at least 10 PM as long as competitors on hand continue to want laps.
Fans are invited to observe the Tuesday practice night without charge.
The practice precedes a big week of racing at Big Diamond. On Friday, June 28, at 8PM the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modifieds, Sportsman and Roadrunners challenge the 3/8th-mile oval in a program featuring at least 11 racing events including a feature for each division. On Tuesday night, July 2, at 7:30 the powerful 410 Sprints are joined by the NASCAR WRS ShorTrack Series Sportsman in Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek by Carquest Auto Parts at Big Diamond. Then, on Friday, July 5, at 8PM it's the annual Georgie Stevenson Memorial Night with a card featuring the NASCAR Modifieds, Sportsman Stocks, and Roadrunnners with the modifieds racing in two feature events plus an Independence Day fireworks display.
Fans and race teams should note that rather than one modified feature over a 50-lap distance, the Stevenson Memorial will return to its traditional double feature format. Plans currently call for the event to be a Twin-20 format but details are being finalized that could enable the features to be extended to the normal, weekly 25-lap distance. The double feature will assist drivers competing at Big Diamond to achieve the minimum point race requirement for the championship race in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge despite all the rain-outs already during the 2002 season. Details will be announced this Friday night.
