Big Diamond Releases 29-Race Tentative Schedule

Minersville, PA (January 29, 2002) - Officials at Big Diamond Raceway have released the track's tentative 2002 racing schedule which includes 29 racing events and three open practice nights. The speedway will open for its 31st racing season on Sunday afternoon April 7 with a 2 o'clock starting time with the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series by Dodge kicking off for the Modifieds, Sportsman and Roadrunners.

The biggest change on the schedule calls for the speedway to operate on Sunday afternoons through the month of April before shifting to the regular weekly Friday night schedule. Racing on April 7 and 14 will start at 2 PM while the events on April 21, April 28 and May 5 will start at 4 PM.

"In the past we scheduled two or three Sunday afternoon dates to open the year," commented track manager, JoAnn Roehrig. "We really relied on great weather for those opening dates so they would be successful enough to carry us through the early Friday night dates in April and May. The weather just cannot be relied on to break to provide warm enough temperatures in April and those cool bights can really hurt the fan turnout. Rather than delay the start of our season, we've decided to try a few additional Sunday afternoon dates."

The Modifieds have 25 races on the schedule with special events including 50-lap championship events on Friday nights, May 24 and July 5, and the annual Coalcracker 100 on Sunday night, September 1. The Sportsman Stocks have 27 events on the schedule culminating with a 50-lap Championship event on Sunday, September 29. The Roadrunners have 28 races set with two 20-lap title races.

Sprint cars are tentatively on the schedule four times. The 410 Super Sprints will make their annual PA Speedweek stop on Tuesday night, July 2. The 360 United Racing Club Sprints will visit the Minersville, 3/8-th mile oval on Friday night, July 19 while tentatively the 358 Sprints are slated to share the spotlight with the track's Sportsman and Roadrunners on Sunday nights, June 16 and August 4.

Additionally Tuesday night open practices for any divisions with or without a NASCAR license are slated for May 21, June 25 and July 30 starting at 7:30 PM.

At least one other special event is being negotiated for the track and, should things work out, details will be announced in the near future. The 2002 schedule actually gets underway with the annual Big Diamond / Fairlane Village Mall Car Show in Pottsville, PA that runs from February 18 through 23. Cars go into the mall on Sunday night, February 17 after the mall closes at 5 PM and the previous week's displays are removed. The annual Pit Crew Tire Changing Competition conducted by Vince James of V and M Towing is scheduled for Wednesday night, February 20, and the annual Memorabilia Auction for the Georgie Stevenson Memorial Charities is planned for Saturday afternoon starting at 4 PM.

But the Big Diamond competitors will continue to display their 2002 racing mounts the next week at the Fairgrounds Square Mall in Reading, PA with Big Diamond Night scheduled for Tuesday night, February 26.
