DUANE HOWARD TAKES 3RD BIG DIAMOND NASCAR MODIFIED 3RD WIN; BUT KEITH HOFFMAN IS BIG DIAMOND NASCAR WRS MODIFIED CHAMPION Minersville, PA - Aug. 25 - Duane Howard of Oley, PA was at his peak Friday night as he captured his third NASCAR Weekly ...

Minersville, PA - Aug. 25 - Duane Howard of Oley, PA was at his peak Friday night as he captured his third NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modified feature win of the year in Big Diamond Raceway's Kenworth/ Cummins 50. But Howard's best was not enough as Keith Hoffman of Whitehall, PA finished fifth enabling him to unseat defending champion, Howard, by 9 points for Big Diamond Raceway's NASCAR WRS Modified Title. Ryan Bauer of Bethlehem, PA took his first career NASCAR EXIDE ShorTrack Sportsman feature win on the evening's card which was also a Simpson Race Products Night. Steve Fessler of Schuylkill Haven, PA rounded out the winners by capturing the 15-lap Accel Roadrunner feature. Pole sitter Ryan Moyer (Port Clinton, PA) led the opening lap of the Kenworth/Cummins Modified 50 but on lap two Brian Engle (Leesport, PA), who started second, used an inside move through turns 1 and 2 to take the lead. Jerry Higbie, Jr. (Slate Hill, NY) moved from fifth to second by lap two and sixth place starter Craig Whitmoyer (Hamburg, PA) took third on lap 3. As these three battled Kevin Graver (Lehighton, PA) and Kerry Kratz (Bechtelsville, PA) went wheel-to-wheel for fourth. Whitmoyer got by Higbie on lap 9 and under yellow with 10 laps complete, Brian Engle pitted with engine trouble and Whitmoyer took charge on lap 11. Higbie was now second followed by Graver, Kratz and 16th place started, Duane Howard. Higbie made a strong bit for the lead using the inside groove on lap 16 but fell just short. This brought Whitmoyer down to protect the inside just as Howard was running outside of Graver for third. Howard took advantage powering around the outside to go by Higbie and Whitmoyer on lap 18 to take the lead. Graver quickly followed suit and found himself second on lap 21. Jeff Strunk (Bethel, PA), who started 18th, took fourth on lap 20 for fourth and third on lap 26. Meanwhile Keith Hoffman and the Wengers of Myerstown/Bashore Trucking 5 had stabilized in sixth spot, the magic position to give him the point championship by 4 points if Howard won. Howard opened up a comfortable margin and was unchallenged throughout the second half of the race while Graver and Strunk battled for second. Higbie passed Whitmoyer for fourth on lap 29 and Hoffman bought himself some championship insurance by taking fifth on lap 32. Howard captured his third win in the Cary Duncan Hutt's Glass Co. 85A over Kevin Graver, Jr., Jeff Strunk, Jerry Higbie, Jr., Keith Hoffman, Craig Whitmoyer, Terry Meitzler (Kutztown, PA), Kerry Kratz, Shawn Reimert (Oley, PA) and Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville, PA). Qualifying heat winners were Barry Readinger (Fleetwood, PA), Brian Engle, Howard and Tim Fitzpatrick (Minersville, PA) while Larry Kelleher (Scranton, PA) and Tom Umbenhauer (Richland, PA) took consolation wins. Joe Biasi, Jr. (New Ringgold, PA) took the first lap lead in the EXIDE ShorTrack Sportsman 20 from pole sitter Darren Dreher (Schuylkill Haven, PA). Jeff Ebersole (Palmyra, PA) took second from Ryan Bauer on lap two, but spun on lap 6. On the restart Ryan Bauer, now second, took to the outside to overtake Biasi on the frontstretch for the lead. John Patchoski (Scranton, PA) and rookie, second generation driver Brad Grim (Coplay, PA) battled for third. Point leader Gary Hager (Stewartsville,NJ) was making his familiar charge from the rear after starting 14th and took fourth on lap 13. But the charge ended as he began to challenge for third when his 44 blew a rear tire. From there is was all Ryan Bauer and the Pizza Como North 1L for the win over Joe Biasi, John Patchoski, Brad Grim, Shawn Fitzpatrick (Pottsville, PA), Lance Hoch (Topton, PA), Donn Edgar (Lehighton, PA), Tom Brennan (Pottsville, PA), Jeff Paulson (Honeybrook, PA) and Brent Boyer (Bloomsburg, PA). Qualifying heat winners were Darren Dreher, Biasi and Edgar with Boyer taking the consolation. Dale Hartz (Hamburg, PA) was the early leader in the Roadrunner feature while Steve Fessler (Schuylkill Haven, PA) moving to second on lap 3. Fessler was patient, maybe too patient, as Jason Oswald (New Ringgold, PA), John Ulsh (Pine Grove, PA) and Barry Schrader (Orwigsburg, PA) made it a wild five car battle for the lead on lap 4. Fessler decided it was time and he moved around the outside of Hartz on lap 6 and left the battle behind. Steve Fessler took his second win of the year over John Ulsh, Marc Berzoski (Minersville, PA), Big Diamond Champion Dean Ulsh (Auburn, PA) and Kirby Schlappich (Temple, PA). Heat winners were Hartz and Schrader.
