Minersville, PA - 6/30 - Meme DeSantis of Blandon, PA piloted the Take Out Mushroom Soil/Hoover Chevrolet 88T to his second win of 2000 at Big Diamond Raceway in the Georgie Stevenson Memorial 50 for NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Modifieds on Friday. Ricky Rutt of Philipsburg, NJ took his first career Big Diamond win in the NASCAR Exide ShorTrack Sportsman 20-lap feature and Dale Hartz of Hamburg, PA took his first Accel Road Runner main event. The WRS Modified feature saw rookie, second-generation racer Ron Mawson, Jr., (Pittston, PA) dominate the first half of the 50-lap affair. Tom Umbenhauer (Richland, PA) applied the early pressure with Kevin Graver, Jr. (Lehighton, PA) grabbing second on lap 4 to take up the charge after Mawson. Had the event been a normal 25-lap feature, Mawson would have recorded his first career win but the best run of his career occurred in a 50-lapper. Meme DeSantis was charging through the field from his tenth starting spot. DeSantis cracked the top five on lap 7 and moved to fourth on lap 8. Umbenhauer fell to Meme's charge on lap 14 and, after several laps of tight racing, Graver also yielded second as well on lap 27. Following a yellow, DeSantis powered down the frontstretch on the outside of Mawson on lap 28 to take the lead. From there it was all DeSantis and the Dennis Eisenhart 88T as Mawson, Duane Howard (Oley, PA) and Graver battled fiercely for second. Following Meme DeSantis at the finish were Kevin Graver, Jr., Duane Howard, Ron Mawson, Jr., Kyle Weiss (Hamburg, PA), Randy Bailey (Kutztown, PA), Randy Fortna (Jonestown, PA), Terry Meitzler (Kutztown, PA), Larry Kelleher (Scranton, PA), and Brian Engle (Leesport, PA). Qualifying heats for the Modifieds were win by Umbenhauer, DeSantis, Keith Hoffman (Whitehall, PA), and Bob Trapper (Scranton, PA) while the dual consolations went to Jeff Strunk (Bethel, PA) and Ktyle Weiss. Steve Symons of Temple, PA took the early lead in the EXIDE Sportsman 20 from his pole starting position. Symons, who witnessed his close friend, Doug Manmiller (Wyomissing, PA) roll his car violently beyond the third turn wall without injury, drove like he was on a mission. Symons looked as smooth as ever but Ricky Rutt finally slipped under the leader on the backstretch of lap 10. Rutt received plenty of pressure from Jimmy Reppert (Hamburg, PA) but it was Donn Edgar (Lehighton) who closed in and made it a late race bid. Rutt took his first Big Diamond win over Edgar, defending champion Tom Brennan (Pottsville), John Patchoski (Scranton), Reppert, Gary Hager (Stewartsville, NJ) , Shawn Fitzpatrick (Pottsville), Ryan Bauer (Bethlehem, PA), Steve Symons and Brad Force. Dale Hartz (Reading, PA) led every lap of the 15-lap main to take the over Glenn "Buckshot" Rowan, Dean Ulsh (Summit Station), Marc Berzowski, and John Ulsh. Heat winners in the roadrunners were Rowan and Hartz. This coming Friday night, July 7, the NASCAR Weekly Racing Modifieds will headline the three division card on a Simpson Race Products Contingency Night. The NASCAR Exide ShorTrack Sportsman and the Accel Roadrunners will round out the racing program, which starts with the first qualifying heat at 8 o'clock.
