West Richland, Wa (May 4, 2002) - After qualifying 2nd in both events and winning the A trophy dash, it was clear that Jeff Bailey was fast. Although he spun out in practice, the 69 of Brandon Riehl captured both poles which included setting the new track record of 17.631.
Twenty year old Scott Walker and Mike Zamora would be in row one for the start of the 1st 40 lap main after the 4 car invert. Zamora quickly shot out to the lead but would soon be overtaken by Riehl on lap 2.
By lap 15, the #97 Mike Olson Dodge of Jason Jefferson had already made it up to 8th. Both Jefferson and the #53 American Dream car of Travis Bennett were penalized and forced to start at the back of the pack after not making it to tech on time. On lap 20, the red flag would drop as the #9 of Jim Vancleve took a hard hit into the turn 4 wall. Vancleve was OK, but the same couldn't be said for the car. He was done for the night.
As the race went back green, Bailey and Riehl were battling for the lead. Bailey got a nose on Riehl and backed off shortly. Bailey would then gain the full position on Riehl at lap 34 where he would eventually take the checkered flag. Brandon Riehl, Jason Jefferson, Mike Zamora and Travis Bennett would round out the top 5.
For the 2nd main event, Mike Zamora and Travis Bennett would be on the front row followed be Bailey and Riehl. Travis Bennett out of Ellensburg, WA. would step out in front and remain there for the next 30 laps. At times Bennett had a 20 car lead on the 2nd place car of Brandon Riehl.
By lap 25, Brandon had caught up to Bennett, but Bennett would hold the position for 5 more laps. As the 69 and 53 were entering turn 1 on lap 30, they would make contact. Bennett spun out bringing the first caution in the 40 lap main. Riehl went on to win the 2nd event followed by Jeff Bailey, Jason Jefferson, Mike Zamora and Ted Mickelson rounding out the top 5.
The win would be Riehl's second victory of the year in the NASCAR weekly racing series presented by Dodge.
