The 'Kyle Busch Show' comes to Dover

Kyle Busch displayed his driving skills at Dover International Speedway late Saturday afternoon, winning the Dover 200 on the famed “Monster Mile.”

The victor led 101 laps to win for the fifth time and for the second consecutive time at Dover. He drove the Monster Energy Toyota. For his accomplished career, Busch chalked up his series-leading 68th victory.

Gaining the edge

Busch gained the advantage during a pit stop midway through the race when his pit crew serviced him in 12.1 second, giving him the lead he never relinquished.

“I knew we had a good car in the first half and I was kind of biding my time," said Busch. "I was trying to pass those guys when I could but the opportunities were never presented quick enough.  When we beat the No. 22 guys off pit road, it was good for us to get out in front, run in clean air and show  what this car had for speed. This Toyota was awesome. It is good to be back in victory lane.”

Pole winner Joey Logano, who led 99 laps, took second followed by point leader Chase Elliott, Chris Buescher, Kyle Larson, Brian Scott, Regan Smith, Trevor Bayne and Ty Dillon.

The runner-up

“We were able to lead a lot of laps and we were very, very fast,” Logano said with frustration showing on his face. “When we pitted, we lost the lead and I was really tight from there on out. We will try to figure out, as these Nationwide races are so short. We came here expecting to win, and I didn’t because we lost the handle.  Overall, it is second.”

Points leader rebounds

Elliott drove superbly after getting caught up in a melee on lap 39. In the action, he dropped from third to 24th but rebounded very quickly, gaining the top-five by lap 90. From then on, he was in close reach of the leaders, ending up third.

Noted youngster Elliott, “I am proud and frustrated at the same time. I thought I had a super-fast car but made a mistake by driving too close, getting involved in a wreck and got behind. I could never get back up to the front. I had a really good car from the drop of the green. The guys did a good job (of fixing the car) and we tried to battle as hard as we could, but it wasn’t enough.”

In the point tally, Elliott leads teammate Smith by 26 points.
