Skip Barber trained racers will start from pole, second and third in Saturday's Subway 300 at Talladega Speedway. Joe Nemechek, often referred to as "Front Row Joe," took the pole and continues to chip away at a place in Busch Series history, as king of NASCAR's big tracks.

Nemechek outran fellow Skip Barber trained Randy LaJoie by nearly half a second. Fellow Barber trained Jimmy Spencer qualified third. Nemechek's fast lap in 0:50.472sec [189.720 mph] made him the winner of four of the past five contested pole positions here [last spring's time trials being postponed due to weather]. Nemechek also has won the pole for the fall Winston Cup race here the past two seasons, and he won pole for the season-opening Busch race at Daytona this year.

Nemechek insists there's no big secret to one fast lap at this 2.66 mile dinosaur.

"Power is what it's all about here," said Nemechek, two-time winner of this race. "In qualifying, the driver just has to make sure it's going in a straight line and put it where it needs to be in the turns. Then it's up to the motor, the chassis and the aerodynamics of the body. That's what makes it go fast."

LaJoie, driving the No. 7 car, was a distant second running 0:50.903 sec. [188.123 mph]. Both drivers made just four laps in practice before pronouncing themselves ready.

"We did a motor test here a few months ago," Nemechek said. "We didn't know how fast we were going to be, but we learned a little about the motor. We just made a run [in practice] to see if we were going to get in the race."

Spencer's No. 1 car missed breaking the Nemechek monopoly by barely a tick, running his lap in 0:50.907 sec.

Saturday's race is scheduled to start at 12:00 EST.
