The No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet finished seventh in the Food City 250
BRISTOL, Tenn. (August 27, 2012) – Ryan Blaney scored his second top-10 finish for Tommy Baldwin Racing at Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend. The NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) rookie started in the 12th position and drove the No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet to a seventh-place finish in the Food City 250.
Blaney took the green flag from the 12th starting spot and held the position when the first caution was called on lap six for a two-car incident in turn three. Blaney radioed that the No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet was free in the entry of the corners. Crew Chief Brad Parrott elected to stay out, and the No. 36 restarted in the 10th spot. Blaney drove into the eighth position before falling back to 14th by lap 21. The NNS rookie radioed to the SealWrap team that his Chevrolet was tight in the center. He felt like the car was coming in and was trying to be conservative at the start of the 250-lap event.
Another two-car incident brought out the caution on lap 27 with Blaney in the 14th position. Parrott elected to stay out once again, and the SealWrap Chevrolet restarted in the 14th spot. He drove in the top-15 for the next two cautions and was in the 14th position when a two-car incident on the frontstretch brought out a caution on lap 46.
While most of the field pit under caution, Parrott elected to keep his driver on the track as a lot of the race was run under yellow flag conditions. Blaney restarted in the lead on lap 54 but fell back to fifth due to a tight handling Chevrolet. Nine laps later, another two-car incident brought out the yellow flag. The team stayed on the track, and Parrott told the team that the pit window would be from lap 95-150 to make the race on one stop.
The field restarted on lap 69 with Blaney in the sixth position. By lap 109, Blaney radioed that the car was beginning to get a vibration as he raced in the seventh position. The No. 41 spun in turn two and brought out the caution on lap 115 with the No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet in the seventh position. Blaney radioed that the car was pretty balanced but needed to turn a little more in turns one and two. Parrott called for a four-tire pit stop with an air pressure adjustment.
The No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet restarted in 11th place on lap 122, and Blaney radioed that the car started off very tight. The No. 24 Chevrolet had an incident in turn four and brought out the seventh caution of the night on lap 173. The team stayed out, and Blaney explained that the car was tighter than it was the last run. The No. 36 Chevrolet restarted in the ninth position on lap 181.
Blaney held onto the 11th position when the No. 99 had an incident in turn two and brought out the eighth caution on lap 227. The team elected to pit and make an adjustment since the No. 36 would not lose a lot of positions pitting. Parrott called for a four-tire pit stop with an air pressure, trackbar and wedge adjustment. The No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet returned to the track in the 12th position.
The North Carolina resident drove into the top-10 by lap 236. A three-car incident in front of the No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet brought out the final caution on lap 244. Blaney dodged the wrecking cars and restarted in the eighth position. In the green-white-checkered finish, he worked the No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet into the seventh finishing position.
“I’m very happy with our finish,” explained Blaney. “Our last pit stop was key. We had planned to finish the race with just one stop, but our car was just too tight on the second run. The team made the car much better for the last 15 laps, and we were able to work back into the top-10.”
Next, Blaney will get behind the wheel of the Brad Keselowski Racing NASCAR Camping World Truck Series machine August 31 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He will return the No. 36 SealWrap Chevrolet and TBR for the NNS race at Charlotte Motor Speedway October 12.
