Coleman Pressley races to top-20 at Richmond for R3 Motorsports
Team moves up in Owner's Points standings for fifth-consecutive race
CHINA GROVE, N.C. (May 1, 2010) -- Coleman Pressley and the No. 23 Chevrolet team of R3 Motorsports had a very productive night of racing at Richmond International Raceway on Friday night.
They were successful on the track, and in the Owner's Points standings.
Starting outside Row 15 for the 250-lap race under the lights of the .75-mile oval of Richmond, Pressley used a smooth line, great car and timely passes to move forward. The race got off to a fairly slow start with two cautions in the first 21 circuits. Pressley, making his third start for R3 Motorsports and seventh career NASCAR Nationwide one, used what he learned during the three-hour practice session earlier in the day to get around the track productively. By lap 60 he was 21st and would use one pit stop for fuel, tires and an air pressure adjustment to break into the top-20 by lap 132.
A lengthy green-flag run left Pressley one lap down with only 15 cars on the lead lap by this point. Another pit stop for fuel, tires and an air pressure adjustment was called for by crew chief Steve Plattenberger on lap 190. For the lap 193 restart, the No. 23 Chevrolet was 19th as the third car one lap down.
Racing to 18th by lap 200, Pressley was running top-10 position times with 50 laps remaining. Not being able to capitalize on the Free Pass Rule to gain more positions, Pressley was trapped in 18th when the checkered flag waved.
As a result of the team's good finish, they moved from 24th to 22nd in the Owner's Points standings. This is the fifth-consecutive race they've advanced moving up nine positions during that span, as well.
The No. 23 now trails 21st place by three markers, 20th by 17 and 19th by 25 points. This weekend, Pressley returns to the still-unsponsored No. 23 Chevrolet for R3 Motorsports at Darlington Raceway.
Noteworthy: R3 Motorsports is the highest it's ever been in the Owner's Points standings right now in 22nd. This has been achieved with no Sprint Cup-team affiliation or technical alliance, by a single-car team, with a crew of seven working on the car at the track and funded totally by the team's owner, Robert Richardson, Sr. as the team is currently without marketing partnerships; but actively seeking them on a daily basis.
Coleman Pressley Quotes: "Man, that was a lot of fun out there under the lights of Richmond. The car turned great and we were able to make the right air pressure adjustments to help me through Turns 3 & 4 when I needed it most.
"We maintained good position all night and never went backwards, only forward. The car handled great, the crew was great on pit road and Steve (Plattenberger) and my dad (Robert Pressley) were helpful on the box.
"I just wish we could have gotten back on the lead lap there at the end and picked up some more positions. The good news is I finished my first Nationwide Series race and brought the car home in one piece.
"This weekend, I get to race at Darlington and learn that track for the first time. This should be fun."
