Sellers Adds Road Course to 2009 Schedule: FP to sponsor #77 Car in Nationwide Race at Watkins Glen
Welcome, NC.: Cardinal Motorsports announced today that primary sponsor SFP is adding the famed Watkins Glen road course to the team's schedule in the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series. The addition of Watkins Glen brings the total to 11 races for the new team and its driver, Peyton Sellers.
Sellers has had an impressive first season in the series this year, qualifying for all races and most recently posting his first top fifteen finish at Milwaukee where he threw down some of the fastest lap times of the day. Watkins Glen will mark the team's first road course this year, but Sellers is no strangers to road courses, including 'The Glen'.
The former Whelen All American National Champion has run the 2.44 mile track as recently as last year in NASCAR's Camping World Series East, and is looking forward to returning. "It's a really great course", said Sellers. "Fun to drive and fast. It's a great addition to the schedule. We're grateful to everyone at SFP and for an opportunity to continue the year together."
"We're very enthusiastic about Peyton's first season and very proud to get him out to the road course at Watkins Glen", commented Jake Sanders, Vice President Market Development, SFP. "Peyton has a bright future in racing and we're excited to have the opportunity to showcase that in an additional race this season".
The 82 lap, 200 mile Zippo 200 is scheduled for August 8. It will be the team's eighth race in the 2009 series this year, and will create a string of three consecutive races for Cardinal Motorsports.
"We're looking forward to the rhythm that comes with consecutive races", said crew chief H. C. Sellers. "We're at a good point with the team right now in terms of personnel and equipment. It was nice to have a few breaks in the schedule early on, but we're ready to run now. The more time we can get on the track and that Peyton can get in the seat week in and week out, the better we'll continue to get."
The team will be testing at VIR near Sellers' hometown of Danville, Virginia. VIR has gained a reputation in recent years as being one of the East Coast's premiere road course testing facilities, and has hosted teams from Sprint Cup, Nationwide, Grand Am Rolex, and a variety of formula cars. "It's great to have this kind of facility close by", commented H. C.
