Travis battled radio issues for the majority of Saturday afternoon’s 200-mile race to finish 22nd at the one-mile track.
DOVER, Del. (September 28, 2013) – Travis Pastrana and the Roush Fenway Racing No. 60 team battled radio issues for the majority of Saturday afternoon’s 200-mile NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Dover International Speedway to finish 22nd at the one-mile track.
After the race took the green flag, Pastrana remained in his starting position, staying quiet on the radio until the first caution flag of the day flew on Lap 25. Pastrana informed the crew that the car was free on entry and in the center and a little tight on exit.
The team opted for four tires and fuel along with track bar and air pressure adjustments. When the race returned to green, the driver radioed to the crew that the adjustments were a step in the right direction.
On Lap 17 the caution flag flew again, but this time the No. 60 team opted to stay out. The strategy gained the team several positions, putting Pastrana in sixth for the restart. On the ensuing restart Pastrana hung tight in the top-10, with strong lap times.
During this green flag run, radio issues began. The crew worked to determine if the issue was a radio in the pit box, on the spotter stand or in the car. After unsuccessfully checking with Pastrana to see if he could hear the crew, the team determined the issue was with Pastrana’s radio.
With the race under a long green flag run, and unsure of when to pit, Pastrana made a green flag stop on Lap 91 from 14th-position. The crew bolted on four fresh tires and filled the car full of fuel. He returned to the track in 23rd.
The radio issues persisted, leaving Pastrana and the crew unable to communicate with each other. As the race remained green, Pastrana again visited pit road on Lap 125. Under this green flag stop, the team opted for four tires and fuel.
The remainder of the race went without a caution flag, which left the No. 60 team with no opportunity to address the radio issues in the car. The No. 60 ultimately crossed the finish line in 22nd.
