Lebanon, Tenn. (June 6, 2009)- Michael McDowell finished 8th in his fourth start at the Nashville Superspeedway Saturday night. The career high finish at the track came from a third place starting spot.
"When I came off turn four during my qualifying run, I told my guys that was the pole. The lap felt so good that I thought we had a legitimate shot a P1 starting spot," said McDowell.
Starting third, McDowell fought a tight condition early. A green flag pit stop on lap 69 gave the JTG Daugherty Racing crew the opportunity to make some wholesale changes. A yellow on lap 112 reset the field with McDowell running 12th. Still tight, more changes to free the car up were in order with field shown the halfway flags.
"The car was just industrial strength tight in the beginning. I actually asked Gene if this was the same car we qualified because it just wouldn't turn", said McDowell.
Freeing the car up was just the ticket as McDowell climbed from 12th to 8th mid race. Just then, he began reporting an intermittent miss in the engine. Self diagnosing a fuel pressure issue, McDowell hung on to finish eighth.
"I felt the car start to sputter going down the straightaway and then noticed the erratic fuel pressure gauge. There is nothing worse than killing it through the corners and get gapped on the straightaway," said McDowell.
This 8th place finish puts McDowell 9th in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship standings, only 3 points from of 8th and 566 points from the lead.
"We have some great momentum right now as we keep improving every weekend. The ConstructionJobs.com crew keeps working hard and I think we are becoming a threat to win races," said McDowell.
