Austin Cindric to make Xfinity Series debut next weekend at Road America
Austin Cindric will make his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut next weekend with Team Penske at a track with which he is very familiar.
Cindric, the 18-year-old son of Penske president Tim Cindric, will drive Team Penske’s No. 22 Ford in next Sunday’s Johnsonville 180 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc.
Austin, who is competing full-time this season in the Camping World Truck Series for Brad Keselowski Racing, has an extensive road-racing background, including starts at Road America in the Pirelli World Challenge series.
“I’m excited to announce I’ll be making my NASCAR Xfinity Series debut at Road America in the No. 22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang for Team Penske,” Cindric announced in a video posted on Twitter Sunday.
“It’s the biggest opportunity of my racing career and I’m really excited to get started at one of the best race tracks in the country, in my opinion. Should be a lot of fun and should be exciting and I hope I can pull it off.”
In 2015, Cindric earned 11 podium finishes across three different series, including four victories in Global RallyCross Lites and one in IMSA. He is the youngest winner in the Continental Tire Series (Mosport) and the youngest driver to ever compete in the Bathurst 12 Hour.
Last season, he won a pair of NASCAR K&N Pro Series East races on the road courses at Virginia International Raceway and Watkins Glen International. He also picked up a victory in the ARCA series at Kentucky.
Cindric plans to do double-duty next weekend, as he will also compete in Sunday’s ARCA race at Road America, which will be run prior to the Xfinity event.
