Luck Not on Michael Annett's Side in Sam's Town 300
Las Vegas, Nev., (March 2, 2009) -- Following a good run in California at Auto Club Speedway, Michael Annett was running in the top 15 in Las Vegas when his day ended early in an unavoidable wreck. Annett dodged trouble in the first six of 12 cautions during the Sam's Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday. In the wrong place at the wrong time, the No. 15 Pilot Travel Centers/HYPE Energy Drinks Toyota Camry was collected in a crash bringing out the seventh yellow flag before the midpoint of the race.
Annett started the 200 lap race 33rd and by lap 36 had moved up 29 spots to the 4th position. Following a pit stop for track bar adjustments after the sixth yellow flag, Annett was in the 14th position at lap 90 when the No. 81 blew a right rear tire on the entry of turn one and took a hard right turn into the Pilot Travel Centers/HYPE Energy Drinks Toyota Camry. The contact sent Annett hard into the turn one wall and straight to the garage. Annett was one of 18 drivers with too much damage to finish the accident plagued race.
"We were running really well in the Pilot Travel Centers/HYPE Energy Drinks Toyota Camry, so it was disappointing to get caught up in the wreck. There was nothing I could do to get out of the way when the No. 81 cut a tire," Annett commented on the crash. "It was a hard hit, I feel lucky to come out of it unharmed."
Although the day didn't go as planned for Annett, he did leave Las Vegas with one win. Annett was victorious in the Fourth Annual Raybestos Rookie of the Year Cooking Challenge at the ESPN Zone in the New York, New York Hotel and Casino on the famous Las Vegas strip. Annett teamed with NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rookie Scott Speed for the competition, the pair created the winning dish, a pasta with meat sauce, judged by children from the Boys and Girls Club of America.
Annett said, "I really enjoyed participating in the Raybestos Rookie Cooking Challenge. We spent some time playing games in the ESPN Zone following the Challenge, and it was good to interact with the children of the Boys and Girls Club. I know I had just as much fun as they did."
With the next two weekends off for the NASCAR Nationwide Series, Annett and his Germain Racing team will have time at the race shop to prepare for the upcoming Scotts Turf Builder 300 at the "World's Fastest Half Mile," Bristol Motor Speedway, on Saturday, March 21.
"We're looking forward to Bristol and with two weeks in the shop we will have our team well prepared," said Annett.
