McDOWELL NOT SO LUCKY IN KENTUCKY
Sparta, Ky. (June 12, 2009)- Michael McDowell finished 29th in the Meijer 300 presented by Ritz at the Kentucky Speedway Saturday night. McDowell says the result didn't show the effort.
"While we struggled with results this weekend, we really pushed for improvement. Instead of coming to the track with a tried and true set-up, we spent the practice session trying different things to improve our standing. We have proved that we are seventh to fifteenth place car and we tried to push that to the next level this weekend", said McDowell.
McDowell started 23rd on the grid but quickly gained positions. In 35 laps, McDowell had picked up eight spots to 15th. However, the car's handling went away and started to fall back with McDowell complaining of a very free condition. A pit stop on lap 66 gave the Tom's Snacks crew a chance to make changes.
Four tires and major chassis adjustments later, McDowell restarted 21st. Pulling off an amazing display of restart savvy McDowell picked up 9 positions in two laps before another caution came out. With a glimmer of hope, McDowell restarted in the 12th spot before losing the handle off turn four only laps later. The Tom's Snacks car spun to the infield before McDowell pulled it behind the wall for repairs.
"We fought the car all weekend, not being able to strike upon anything that worked well for us. Without testing, the only way to improve the program is to take chances at the track, and that's what we did. The entire JTG Daugherty team did a great job hustling all weekend long and we learned a lot", said McDowell.
McDowell returned back to the track to finish 29th, 32 laps down.
This 29th place finish puts McDowell 11th in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship standings, only 2 points from of 10th and 670 points from the lead
